As a side note, could somebody tell me a bit about what it was like in the days when collectables mattered, what it was needed for, what you did with them?
Collectables are the best (and really, the only reliable) way of getting Crafting and Gathering materia.

Its also a FANTASTIC way to level crafters at points where your leves are either awful, and you're using them on the classes with good leves, or holding them until you get back to a level with good leves, as not only do they provide somewhere between 7 and 10 times the XP of making an item, but they net you scrips as well. And scrips can turn into gear if necessary (when I leveled my crafters through heavensward, getting one to level cap was enough to buy a full set of blue gear for the next class, with about half that many scrips left over).

Perhaps if they required a collectible and worked it in with the plot, more people might start doing them?
Custom deliveries every week require collectables, and are, per craft, the best source of scrips and XP in the game.

Making a collectible is no different to making a HQ, you just turn on Collectible Synthesis before you start.

I don't craft so I am biased against having another crafting Beast Tribe I can't interact with. :s

I thought that collectable started at 10X more difficult then HQ and went up past there if you wanted gold or perfect?

Not at all. Max collectibility is the same as 100% HQ.

The biggest difference is that collectibles count without relying on RNG if you're not at 100%.

Then either I really REALLY misunderstood the explenation in the quests, or the explenation is really really bad.

(hint, if I'm able to misunderstand it that bad, it's not a good explenation)

You can see how it works in game by pressing the collectable toggle at any time during the synth prior to completion.

And then hitting it again to deactivate collectable mode.

Okay, I've just encountered "custom deliveries" and these are the best thing I've ever seen in crafting quests. If the beast tribe did it this way, instead of the ARR collectable way, I still think that would be cool...

Course, still never figured out how to do the ARR delivery things easily... if it's even better in the long run then these collectables though... could I use Aetherial reduction on these, or only the gathered ones?

The great thing about them besides the XP, is that you can use their crafts to practice HQ crafting, especially on the quests that don't require HQ, but have very high quality targets. If you blow one, you just ask for a new set of mats, instead of having to go out and gather for a few more hours (Or spend millions of gil on the MB)

I dread the day I get my crafters to 70 and lose the tribes for leveling. I suppose the delivery quests might be almost as good, since the mats are affordable from vendors, but you can only do 12 of those a week. Not looking forward to going out and gathering everything I need for crafting levequests.

This doc will show you what leves to do, how much xp they give, and how many of each you'll need to do to get crafts from 70 to 80. It's much easier/faster than you might think.

EDIT: darn looks like the doc was taken down...

How many men am I involved with? Well that depends... do you mean men as in males? Or just midlanders?
