Choosing which retainers are kept when canceling additional?

When you open the retainer menu, the option in the corner is there to organize the retainer order. Just move the ones you don't want to the end.

Does that actually work when cancelling retainers though? I haven't tried it, but it would be very strange if it did since the game feels it's important to tell you what order your retainers were created in.

What I do/did is dismiss the retainer I don't want from the advocate before the sub for that retainer expires.

Not really going to work if you actually level your retainers, which someone with a bunch of DoL retainers almost certainly does.
