Hrothgar Review

It's been around a month and overall I must say I'm more dissapointed then pleased with the race and below is why.

Hardly any headgear can be worn, though I appreciate the devs work to make some headgear wearable before shb came out.

Can't make full on tiger cause they didn't give a bald head or at least super short hair option for one of the faces.

I'm still a hrothgar but I don't know for how long, I'm hoping by 5.3 they add some new faces/hairstyles, I'm try to hold out but don't know if I can.

Hopefully the bunny girls are in a better situation then us because I was all pumped up for hrothgar when they got announced, even after hearing limitations they'd have, but getting in game and getting to try them out I must say I am eating my words when I said release em anyways they look so cool.

In closing they look cool, unless you were hoping for a tiger cause they just end looking like a lion with tiger make up on, and I'm really hoping more hairstyles/faces get added cause with some more options this race can be super bad ass but currently thier let limitations feel as bad as blue mage to me.

Disappointed that hairstyles are linked to faces - therefore the hairdresser in the inn is almost pointless. Could have been really great and was going to move my alt to it, but after playing around in character creation I'm not going to.

Viera is a lot better, though I think both Hrothgar and Viera need more helmet support and more hairstyles. Yes, they need to re-work Hrothgar.

They should've never released them in the state that they were in period. There's too many issues with them to be something you would release as a finished product.

This is the kinda stuff that Blizzard pulls and the fact that SE is doing now is terrifying. This let's release unfinished stuff and promise that it will be fixed later bullcrap is the reason people abandoned Wow.

Pro tip for next time SE. Fix your stuff and make it 100% before you release it to paying customers. You piss off less of them that way.

Pretty dumb that hairstyles are bound to faces and that they can wear literally no headgear , only certain are visibe.
Also that they hunch like the notre dame bro but the poses under emotes show they can stand uUPRIGHT -_-

i'm assuming every helm going forward will fit them. Considering how much the devs love to re-use gear you will eventually be able to wear every headgear the game has available so on that aspect people need to be patient.

Regarding the hairstyles being bound to the face yeah... that sucks.

Having both races as limited as they are is one thing, but I think the egregious thing is not allowing hrothgar to change anything without a fantasia. I don't know if this is some limitation or something, but it's ridiculous as it is now. You guys get like one face, and an option of braids or whatever, then you have to pay for fantasia if you want to ever change it. Seems a bit much, in my opinion.

Not only should they add more to the race (and viera), I think they need to fix this somehow.

Yoshida: It won’t be displayed. It’s impossible with the current FFXIV’s system because of Viera’s and Hrothgar’s faces. The logic is that it was impossible to make helmets that would fit. For example, if we talk about Viera’s ears, you can make them fall sideways in which case we have to make the be in the same position as Miqo’te’s, otherwise it wouldn’t resonate with the system. So, we thought that if we don’t make new races that have new looks, that it doesn’t make any sense to add any, so I decided that it doesn’t matter if they can’t wear helmets. Therefore, no matter what helmet you equip, you can equip it, but it won’t graphically show. However, we did decide to enable display of head pieces that hide the entire head, so if you want to wear the Fat Chocobo Head, you can. Glasses and Circlets won’t be displayed. If we were to separately decide which item is fine and which isn’t, we would have to go through a huge number of items, so we decided to disable the graphics completely and only allow the headpieces that hide the entire head.

So we might not even get hats/helmets at all because LUL system limitation.

I just don't think this is plausiable. Give as helmets and let my bunny ears just bleed through dammit. Hrothgar is more difficult understandably, but Viera have normal faces and only ears on the top of their head. I don't see the issue of the ears bleeding through.

The most disappointing thing about Hrothgar is definitely the fact that you have to buy a Fantasia every time you want to change the hair. As someone who sometimes gets an urge to change it I wouldn't be able to play something that makes me pay real money for such a change.

And another thing on top of this is that Hrothgars don't get even a few hairstyles from the onces other races have. Maybe not all of them but I'm sure it'd be possible to put at least some of them on Hroth faces... that is if they made them separate :/
Bunnies also have the lack of hairstyles problem and it feels like they at least get more choices but honestly half of Vieras' hairstyles are just the other half with some bangs slapped onto them.

Not to mention the fact that people farmed/spent gil/real money on some hairstyles and now can't even use them so they sit there like a big waste of time or money. I don't have much hope for the big cats but I'll still pray for both them and the bunnies getting access to older hairstyles in the future.

I wholeheartedly agree. I couldn't care less for clipping, if it's bad I'll just hide or glamour the headpiece and if it looks fine I'll just deal with the fact that there are no actual holes.

Given how we were able to get some 500+ pieces of headgear available for the new races at launch thanks to some kind devs working behind Yoshi P and on their own time leads me to believe that this aforementioned system is automated to a degree so they might have had to do things manually or some extensive reworking of the system to give us the headgear we have now. Then again I'm not a programmer for this game so I obviously don't know. I've also seen it stated that they would make certain pieces compatible based on player demand/request. Maybe this was awkwardly translated. Either way this statement is kind of inconsistent with what we have and it's clear that it is indeed possible.

As for my opinion on Hrothgar I like many other people condemn the fact that hair is tied to face and that it can't be changed without a fantasia. I'm hoping that it was at least some form of technical oversight because expecting players to commit to one hairstyle (and not even allowing them to change between hair that shares the same face at the very least) and intentionally locking it behind a paywall - especially if they plan on releasing new hairstyles/faces later down the line - is a really scummy move.
This is probably going to sound terribly petty but with the relatively limited options Hrothgar have in terms of customization I feel that "same-face" is far more prevalent with them. Even though the other races excepting Hyur have just four faces to choose from as well it really exemplifies how much the hairstyle options can offset this issue, and when each Hrothgar face only has two to choose from... it just makes it all the more difficult to make a character that really stands out from the rest.
