Just to clarify after testing Decoy does NOT affect the actual damage output of Hellfire. Surviving the attack on 100hp isn't a feat as a MNK or other class, decoy won't go anywhere to helping that figure, even if you get the feeling it does.
Secondly, you are smarter to use Fists of Earth over Fists of Wind in the Ifrit fight as it is his massive elemental weakness and you gain boosted defence which will actually do something to help your survivability.
Feel free to throw it on and see your damage output sky-rocket
With all this said though, when you factor in worthwhile skills etc, it's actually just smarter to PGL it and have sentinel, self-cures for emergency purposes during jump phases etc and general survivability over the MNK.
Uh... what? Ifrit is weak to Wind and you throw out WS's more quickly and can escape from eruptions much more easily with Fists of Wind up. That ability feels practically made for the Ifrit fight. Not to mention Defense doesn't protect against anything except for Claw swipes, which you won't be getting hit by unless you are tanking.
Ifrit's elemental weakness is Wind. Study the elemental wheel of FFXIV.Secondly, you are smarter to use Fists of Earth over Fists of Wind in the Ifrit fight as it is his massive elemental weakness and you gain boosted defence which will actually do something to help your survivability.

Defense does nothing to reduce damage on any of the attacks you take from Ifrit as a DD. Everything is magic-based and only your fire resistance stat will help. The only physical attack he has is his swipe which hits only the tank. This is why players are able to do santa/reindeer/naked Ifrit runs. Defense means nothing.
FoW grants a massive reduction to WS cooldowns as well as a bonus to movement speed when Temple Boots are equipped.
When you factor in the massive boon of FoW, it's not beneficial at all to use PGL over MNK especially when the Ifrit strategy when using jobs is to bring down all of the infernal nails to greatly diminish Hellfire's potency rather than use Sentinel to survive it.
I seriously recommend actually entering the Ifrit fight and trying out FoE and FoW directly after each other and come back and tell me whether I'm right or wrong here - you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Sure I'll try it but even if FoE somehow does more damage than FoW, I would still prefer FoW because of the 40% cooldown reduction on all weapon skills and the 25% faster movement speed.
Agreed that FoW is a godsend on this fight if only for the movement speed.
Maybe this is common knowledge, but I gotta ask...... Is there any way to tell which is the front and back sides on the nails? I couldn't get the 3rd part off for the Pummel combo or get a back combo going either.
Thanks for the guide, I've been curious about this but seeing as I only really get to do Ifrit via pick-ups I doubt I'm ever going to get to use mnk in that fight /sulk
No idea, they always make me go thau but I'm curious about this too.

If you have your chat log set to show your attack damage, it will tell you what side of the nail you are hitting when you use a WS (might also tell you on regular hits... not sure). If it doesn't work on regular hits use a quick-cooldown WS to test what side you are on (Fists of Wind helps out even more in this regard), it should only take 2 WS's to figure out its orientation.
It may feel like you wont have enough time if you do this but once you can combo it you can murder a nail really quickly all by yourself.
