Launching game maxes CPU. fps drops to 0

Downloaded the 5.05 update this morning, but every time I launch the game, my CPU usage maxes and the game runs at less than a frame per second. Audio still works fine. I'm able to adjust settings in configuration, and even log in, but not do anything. Exiting the game causes it to fail, and it has to be terminated from the task manager. No error codes ever appear. And I just bought 4 months of game time

Could you provide a system report? Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.'
