if it is a laptop its even more likely the keyboard has a function button for those keys. I don't know if you can change the key bindings on those keys, perhaps you could check that? but if you aren't getting the message you obviously aren't taking the screenshot.

If your using a laptop there is a good chance you need to hold down function for one or even both of those actions to work. Laptops must use condensed keyboards and so a lot of keys serve dual purposes.
