I think the maze like appearance of The Black Shroud turns players away. Kazham in FFXI wasn't even as bad as The Black Shroud. You should never look at a map and only see tunnel or cave like crevasse littered all over the map. People most likely like Ul'Dah because it is most open map in starting out cities. Sure La Noscea is open too, but its a giant U. Imagine if you had to walk from one side to the other - jeesh. I started out in Ul'Dah cause I thought it was cool, so its annoying to go to a different city and see nobodys there. I like the feeling of different 'cultures' almost from different cities. and all that originates from the lore/story behind each city giving each player a role to fill almost. hence, RPG.

Ul'dah's city layout is more friendly I would say. Multiple routes to get to most places. The map is not to scale in a good way, so running from the Wards to the Weavers isn't a super long run.

Aethryte, repair, wards, retainer, adventurer's guild, vendors, and the city exit are all nearby each other. The doors to the Adventurer Guild seemed to open more often last I was on, versus standing there. And then, Ul'dah is between Limsa and Gridania, so traveling to either one by foot isn't as bad as from Limsa to Gridania or vice versa.

Where in Limsa, the aethryte is halfway between wards and adventurer guild. None of these are close to the city exit. And the repair npc and retainers are fairly separate from the above as well. Limsa's exit seems close to the adventurer's guild, but descend a flight of stairs and it's quite a run. The good news is, Camp Bearded Valley is right there, so it balances out for low ranks.

Gridania has aethryte and wards close together. The city has limited routes. But repair is on the other side of the city with the retainer and the adventurer's guild. And the exit seems close to the adventurer's guild, but length wise is quite a run.

And yet, I like guildleves for Limsa more than Ul'dah. (Haven't been a fan of cactuar and undead leves in Horizon or those stupid ant lions that atttack you relentlessly on the way to your leve target)

The best thing about Ul'dah as well is most of the SP camps are in that zone. Horizon, Well's, Mines, Broken Water....

(used to be right beside two AWESOME doblyn camps before the nerf stick was bashing around)

Early on I could make alot more money in Gridania than Ul'dah, the things I was selling would always sell for a good price and be gone by the next morning.

But now that Gridania is deserted I tend to only go there for guild support for some of my subcrafts. Ul'dah is the logical home city for me just based on guilds (Pugilist, Thaumaturge, Goldsmith guilds), but I'd already seen the storyline for Ul'Dah and Limsa in alpha/beta and wanted something different to look forward to on release.

For those who played FFXI it seems like Ul'dah is the new Jeunno.

I'm originally from Gridania. I migrated to Ul'Dah because of the main story.

But now that I own a LS and everything, Ul'Dah is the place to be. The other behests are always empty, and so are the market wards. Unfortunately. I'm getting tired of the desert already xD

BUT sometimes I make my trip to Limsa, to get to the Cooking Guild ;P And to gridania, to the archer's guild. I'm a cooking archer XD

Yes and no. I'm often in Ul'dah because of the Goldsmith's guild so naturally I want to pick up decent level leves for my main craft and take other leves within the same city.

I try to visit the other places for mixing up my other craft leveling. Limsa is easier for me to get around to after leves at Camp Horizon, Grid I more rarely go off to.

I started in Ul'dah with all of the characters I have created; originally, because I was posted there within my linkshell for pearl distribution. During the first weeks I had wished I was posted in Limsa hehe; however, I have never started in any other location. It is convenient to me that players have congregated there.

Pretty sure the place whose name is totally not ripped off of Isengard is going to be the new Jeuno. When that happens, all of the original cities and their wards will be ghost towns. ^^)

Thanalan is actually my least favorite of the regions. It is pretty enough, for a desert, but I am not a big fan of deserts! But yes, to an extent I have "moved" there, though I started in Gridania. It is rather depressing to me, being essentially confined to one region for almost anything that involves a group - raptor parties in Coerthas aside, as those usually start in Ul'dah. >.< (and at this point, ranking up my DoM solo is pretty much a waste of time). But most people from my linkshells, and people in general, are in Thanalan, so it is where I usually am too. -sigh-

But I have this handy thing called "anima" that I use 2-3 times a day to travel to far away places, often including at least one city that is not Ul'dah! Mostly for the crafting leves, but also for battle when I just can't stand the monotony of the same ol' desert landscape anymore. xD

And you can bet that once I get the battle class I'm working on to 50 then I will happily go back to playing in La Noscea and The Black Shroud more often while I get to ranking up my next battle class.
