Ul'dah has become the "Jeuno" of FFXIV...

Since it's centrally located, well laid-out, and tied to the main quests, players have migrated there from the other two cities.

Since the wards aren't connected, more people setting up their retainers in Ul'dah means a better chance of your items selling there and a better chance of finding what you're looking for there.

Even though the Black Shroud could use a complete redesign, I don't regret starting in Grid (that's where the Conjurer's Guild is) but I do spend most of my time in Ul'dah. Not only are the markets busier, but the higher concentration of players in the region means that the Horizon, Nanawa Mines, and Broken Water behests seem to be more popular than those around Grid and LL. You have a better chance of finding a group while doing Guildleves in the camps around Ul'dah than those around Grid or LL as well.
