Don't let this experience discourage you, it's completely normal to not be perfect when you're learning (and even when you aren't anymore), and the party members were out of line flaming you and not believing you.

If you're playing Gladiator at level 22, just remember to always have your Iron Will buff (tank stance) always on. When you're approaching an enemy group, you can first target one with Shield Lob (ranged attack) for initial pull, then when you get close to the group spam Total Eclipse for AoE damage and enmity on all targets. Use Fight or Flight whenever it's up to boost your damage. Keep enemies as closely stacked together as possible, turned away from your party members, and as still as possible. For damage mitigation, all you have at that level is Rampart, so use it at the start (when you have gathered all the enemies) of bigger pulls. If you manage to do all this, you're already doing great! If you lose an enemy (which shouldn't really happen anymore because of how strong your enmity received from tank stance is), take it back with Provoke and Shield Lob.
