Red star next to my name?

    Hey, another new player here!

So I just started playing the game a few days ago, got a character to level 30 or so, bought the game and started a new char to play as Au Ra. Loving it so far.
I went with gladiator on the Au Ra and just had my first dungeon. Let's just say I didn't do too well as a tank right off the start.
Got instantly flamed for it and apoligized, saying that I'm new. Two players promptly called bs, saying that I have a red star next to my name, so I'm clearly not a new player followed by more not so nice things.

What were they talking about and why does it mark me as an experienced player, according to them?
Looking at my own name I only see a pretty little plant next to it...

There is no red star. There are red(ish) icons and a gold star representing mentor status. It sounds like you just ended up in a dungeon with a bad group. Times can be difficult for new tanks. If you want to avoid jerks in the DF until you have a chance to get some practice, try putting up a party finder.

If you feel that you are being harassed by other players, report them. SE takes reporting pretty seriously.

    Hi Apdemic

    Interesting

The closest I can find is the Red 'X' = 'Not Found'

Gamerescape: Dictionary of Icons - Player Icons

I am making a big assumption here
it might mean if they saw the 'Red X' by your name, then their game client's couldn't pick up what icon you should have by your name.

    Hope that helps

Sucks that you got a bad group straight up. Please don't let that tarnish your opinion of the game, there will always be jerks but there's also a lot of nice people in this game too.

To my knowledge there are only 4 red player icons, and none of them are stars nor do they indicate player experience. A red circle with a squiggly line through it means that person is experiencing connection issues and is likely about to disconnect entirely. A red face means you're set to Busy status, which mostly just lets you ignore whispers and such. A red chair means you're afk. And finally, a pair of red swords means you're currently in a Leve quest.

Of those 4, the only ones you could get in a dungeon (provided you don't go afk for an extended time) is the connection icon and the busy icon. Neither of them indicate player experience at all, though it should be noted that while they're up, the green sprout, which DOES indicate you as a new character, will be hidden. Perhaps you somehow got one of these icons and the others assumed you were experienced by the lack of sprout?

they were idiots as everyone here has pointed out. Plus, you are clearly listed as a level 20 gladiator. Can't get much newer than that.

Don't let this experience discourage you, it's completely normal to not be perfect when you're learning (and even when you aren't anymore), and the party members were out of line flaming you and not believing you.

If you're playing Gladiator at level 22, just remember to always have your Iron Will buff (tank stance) always on. When you're approaching an enemy group, you can first target one with Shield Lob (ranged attack) for initial pull, then when you get close to the group spam Total Eclipse for AoE damage and enmity on all targets. Use Fight or Flight whenever it's up to boost your damage. Keep enemies as closely stacked together as possible, turned away from your party members, and as still as possible. For damage mitigation, all you have at that level is Rampart, so use it at the start (when you have gathered all the enemies) of bigger pulls. If you manage to do all this, you're already doing great! If you lose an enemy (which shouldn't really happen anymore because of how strong your enmity received from tank stance is), take it back with Provoke and Shield Lob.

Thanks a lot for the quick help everyone!

The next few dungeons proved that that group was indeed just an exception.
I still got a long way to go and I'm loving it!
