The point of the attack itself? To disrupt the targeted service. Reasons why the attack is performed in the first place vary between a third party renting a botnet and using it to attack the service due to some perceived wrong or what have you, and the botnet's owner advertising their "product's" capabilities so that they can sell or rent them out to said third parties, in which case, it's simply a matter of business.

These people would lose more business by doing this. They already have access to an endless supply of new accounts using stolen credit cards. They will just load up new accounts in no time. If they crash the servers then they themselves can't farm and sell GIL.

Yeah, RMTs probably prefer more up time than down time. So I would doubt that they are behind any DDoS attacks.

It's a pathetic show of force that are carried out by people who have no ethical quandaries with ruining other peoples lives and money in order to force continued, repercussions free cheating.
