God, I can't even get through the nerfed books. The people that did that in ARR's prime are MVP's.This. Relics are my tomestsones. All of them. No mercy.
ARR is pretty tame now but HW relic still eats thousands of poetics with no way to lower the costs for the most part.
If you want to actively play some other combat classes, the (augmented) 50/60 gear is always worth investing into. Otherwise: mats.
I used mine to get all my job's lvl 70 ilvl400 gear lol. After you finish collecting all the gear you need you can start wasting them on old 4.0 crafting mats. Most of them still sell for 1-1.5k each.
Try looking up these 2 items:
Ground Sloth Pelt
Thavnairian Alumen
I think you could buy them NQ for 10 poetics each. That's at least 200k for 2000 poetics.

It sucked. Waiting for the right FATEs was what took most time for me as gold rating was needed and I was often too late to get it with so many other people doing them. As a dps I imagine the queue times for the 45+ dungeons were annoying aswell.
But on the bright side: the books are the longest and most annoying stage. Everything after that is relatively fast and easy, escpecially at 60+.
Book stage was the one where I almost gave up.

There are no bad suggestions here, but one thing not mentioned is that you can use poetics to trade for combat based grade VI materia in Idyllshire for 800 each. There are other ways to obtain grade VI (obviously) but it's no longer awarded through DF dailies (via clusters) and it's a 20 point stat increase over grade VII while requiring a much lower iLvl to meld. As you move into Shadowbringers, having some extra materia couldn't hurt.
Also, 2000 poetics might seem like a lot, but you can hit cap a couple of times a week just by doing dailies, so if you stay on top of it, you will find that they have many uses because they are basically SE's way of making sure new players can catch up.
