Singular they has been around since the 15th century. It's been used as a singular pronoun for longer than it has as a plural pronoun. So it's very much grammatically correct. Changing pronouns is very simple in English. I'm aware it's more complicated in French, German, and Japanese but I'm not a fluent speaker of any of those languages so I can't speak for them.
