I think that this is the problem with most MMOS. They're repetitive.
FFXIV is not the type of game that I can play for a long time, it's usually 3-months, a huge gap and then back at it usually at the end of the expac when I pretty much forgot how to play and learn again hah.

To be honest, FFXIV improves and changes things, but it's usually bit-by-bit, they make a system, get feedback, do something more or less similar, get more feedback, and step by step. I think that this is better than trying to re-invent the wheel every expac or patch, but it is less exciting I guess.

I would like to see things such as different builds, specializations or even some sort of customization within FFXIV jobs. I don't really see they doing it though. FFXIV focus on delivering some sort of balance and when you do that, you kinda compromise a lot of other possibilities on the long run.

I guess that's how these games are (even those that are not themeparks, I loved RO but you can't really say that the combat was... well, complex), if you're looking for a deep gameplay I would suggest something that is not a MMO. Because you can't really get this from this genre.

You will have abilities and game systems that are only relevant for a single expansion cycle before there’s a good chance that the way your favorite class/spec is played is shaken up again. It’s very irritating having to relearn your class each new expansion and wondering if you’ll get to even keep your favorite abilities.
I definitely see your point. I think they could try to strike a balance though maybe? Not reinvent the wheel sort of level, but at least try to make it feel more engaging? That’s just my view anyway.

Yeah I definitely have been taking bigger breaks from it recently, but instead of coming back feeling super refreshed and excited, I just feel that same pang of boredness I guess? The familiarity may be comforting to a lot of people but I suppose I just prefer more varied and unexpected experiences.

This game is interesting in the sense that it kind of bridges two pretty different intersections of gamers, many people who play the game primarily out of love for the FF series more than the MMO genre, and vice versa. And of course there’s players who enjoy both like me. That’s why I’m so invested in this game and for me it’s extra painful trying to take a break as I adore the game as a FF fan and also a fan of MMO’s. I just wish there was a bit more variability and change in the combat, some risk taking instead of doubling down on playing it safe and resorting to homogeny you know? Even the graphics and character customisation have barely been touched, if at all. It’s all these factors that are contributing to this general feeling of staleness I suppose.

I'd say it's been made worse with this expansion, and that's quite an accomplishment.

But that's just how this game is and I've accepted that years ago. I'm here for the story mostly.

Part of the issue is, to bring about a 'big change' like you may want, it'd require the rework of the base, failure 1.0 game code that much of the basis of the current game is rooted in. And reworking THAT mess means it most likely cannot be done in isolated, controlled segments and it has to be done all at once.

So now you have a conundrum. On one hand, yes, the game has a predictable cycle and could become quite stale. On the other hand, it's an actively updated, constantly given content cycle that the players have come to expect, want, and demand. If you want the change, the base must be updated/scrapped and remade, but to do that, they have to stop the current content cycle (meaning we have nothing new) for possibly months to divert the devs to that monumental task. And let's not even add the need to test, plan, implement, and the maint time it may take to do so (easily a 72+ hour maint window honestly, and that's being naive about how the development works and is implemented to live servers).

I don't see the upper management giving Yoshi-P the OK to do that, either. It's one thing to have a content drought due to a major expansion coming up, but to have one to update the base code would inevitable lead to unsubscribes, even if they plan to come back, and having to probably get MORE management and devs to do the rework. They'd have to put upfront money and hope for a payout in the future. Would it increase stability, allow innovation and better expansion in the years to come? Sure. Will that pay off for them? Honestly I dunno, and that's probably why they won't do it unless it's in hard evidence and can be proven that doing so will not only pay off the upfront costs but also incur acceptable profit.

    Yes.

I have personally found that I don't enjoy the repetitive nature of the game's content at all. I do like playing with friends, and I like the main story. So every patch I get caught up on the new story stuff, do the new dungeons only once or twice, and play some normal-mode raids with my small FC friends on the weekends.

Repeating the expert roulette 5-6 times a week for the same dungeons for half a year, as well as attempting to farm EX fights is terrible, and so I just stopped doing them some time ago. I still love the game, I just don't play every day. And I get to play some of the other 100 games that come out every year too.

At this point you know what you are getting with FF14.... wishing it was something else isn't going to change the product.

Yeah I think I’ll have to resign myself to just playing it for the story too. That’s whats mostly kept me playing the game tbh, before it was the thrill of unlocking new classes and trying them out, but that of course wears out very fast. If the story wasn't so great I’d have likely stopped playing permanently even.

Just thought I’d also clarify something: FF14 is definitely very successful right now, and that’s fantastic. I’m just sharing my perspective as a veteran player. I totally get how this game is incredibly fun and stimulating to many newer players, or familiar and just great for a lot of other vets, but I’m just sharing my view as another type of player who, yes, loves this game and the impact it’s had on my life in a positive way, but am concerned about it’s future unless we see any indicators of change.

If the game were to change to the extent that it's no longer boring every 6 months gameplay wise, at that point it's not the same game anymore.

I'm not playing this for it to turn into BDO 1 patch, Tera the next, wow the patch after that, age of conan after that.

I like xivs gameplay. It's why I'm still here. That and the story. Changing that would make this not the game I signed up for anymore.

I've never unsubbed, been here since 2.0s launch, and much of 1.0, including the beta, all of 2.0s alphas and betas.

ESO IS one for you to check out, as long as you don't bother with endgame.

The meta makes the builds very homogenized to the point some people feel class doesn't matter much.

But if you are a casual player you can customize your build in all sorts of insane ways. Since I didn't do content that involved meta I created a build to maximize the perks of being an Argonian dps, for example (jewelry boosting the benefits of potions, sets that returned mana with potions etc)

The combat is also a mix of hot bar and action.

As a palate cleanser for FFXIV I find it works well. Just don't expect this game's level of polish.
