I don't think SE will position servers in every region. I don't think it has much to do much with segregating the playerbase so much as their core development team is in Japan and want to be close to their hardware.

As far as people talking about latency and such, anyone in Japan will always have an edge against anyone not there since they are closer to the servers. In Japan they probably have a 10-20ms ping. I live in Arizona and I get about a 50ms ping to the server, and it gets worse the further east you go. That's why Europeans notice lag the most; they're getting 200ms (or worse) pings to the server. This is all networking related and it won't be better unless routes to the server are better optimized. (which SE has no control over)

We're getting localized (albeit located in Japan, but regional) servers anyway in 2.0. Why all the fuss? Is it because the players for forced global servers realize they're in the minority?

Most of us don't login at 3am to play with our cousins on the other side of the globe, speak 4 different languages, or simply don't want to deal with the terrible auto translate. For those that do, you'll still have your global servers.

I love how ppl are trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. All this for pvp content that is still so far off.

How about you guys way for it to come out, and check out the server state in 2.0? And then you can report all the problems you have, instead of predicting them without any proof.

Because there is no reason to want separate NA servers now, except for pure elitism.

This is one feature that sets the FF MMOs apart from all the others, the way we have global servers, where you can meet and interact with as many different people as there are. Isn't that why there are MMOs? To play with other people?

in typical cases like yours its takes tenth of a second to talk to the server in japan maybe 7000 miles from you, slow right?

lag in this games is your pc is too slow or if your using a standard hdd your read speed is too slow cuz alot of objects have to load.

    I hope so.

For those saying that they could keep some servers international making some regional...

A majority seem to prefer international. So those servers would fill up, and leave your precious NA servers with rather low populations.

Fixed* A majority of those on the forums seem to prefer international, even though the vast majority of players who might be interested in FFXIV have quit the game*.

I wouldn't underestimate the demand for language oriented servers. I subscribed to the game just so I could transfer to a server with a better Jp:En ratio. The server I'm on now will likely end up with a 3:1 ratio, of not higher, and I'm hoping the server I'm going to will end up with more of a 2:1. This means there will be more people I can communicate with, hopefully more players who play in my time zone, and a better overall experience. Playing with people I can't understand don't take anything away from my experience, but they don't add anything to it.

Pretty much every other MMO with regional options say otherwise.

I can give you the best reason of all. I want to TALK to the other people playing the MMO I want to enjoy, and I want to play with people in relatively the same time zone as me. Being CST, even PST time zone is horribly inconvenient for me.

Either way I'm against encouraging people to sequester themselves into NA / EU / JP servers. I play a MMO to play with people around the world. I play at odd hours for a "NA" player and enjoy being able to find people at any givin time of day.

I'd be all for the "Give em a choice of local or global" servers but it would probably just spiral into everyone cloistering themselves in the regional servers.
I am glad you're willing to compromise. I don't want to take away the experience from people who do speak Japanese, French, German, and/or other languages from playing with their friends on international servers. I do vehemently want my own regional/localized/time zone based server where I can play and enjoy my time on the game with people who I can understand.

The auto translate is not an acceptable communication device, and having a "nighttime" economy is an invalid excuse because every other MMO that has regional servers manages without this fabled "nighttime" economy.

So very very wrong. In every other modern MMO (even Starcraft II), people play on their own regions due to a simple choice of being able to communicate and play with people whom they understand.

Ultimately, I am all for giving players a choice of server type (international and region based) to play on. You won't see me on an international server though.

I fully support region/time zone based servers.

I have never experienced any lag. The few times I did I forgot to turn my PC fan on or something else like that.
