But imagine the possibilities if they went all out on immersion breaking:

Stranger Things crossover event with Upside Down dungeon that rewards Wind Up Eleven minion and Max's skateboard for a mount.

Calvin and Hobbes crossover event that rewards a Hobbes minion that is alive on your screen and a stuffed toy on everyone else's.

MST3K crossover event with Torgo trial fight that rewards Crow and Servo minions that trash talk your performance.

Area 51 Invasion crossover event raid with bosses that use the 'probe' mechanic. Rewards Saucer mount that plays the five tones.

OK, this is one cross over I would love to have. Crow and Tom mocking me constantly? I would actually use a different minion than Midgardsormr for that!!

I have never needed anything as much as I need this right now. Chuck Cameron Mitchell in there and we've got the ultimate crossover.

Crossover stuff breaks your immersion but not catgirls in scantily clad outfits wielding a giant sword?

You and some posters here don't understand that it's still "okay" if a catgirl (FFXIV race) uses a feature of the game (changing clothes) or weapons (giant swords) known to the game. Because a bikini tank - as much a I dislike them - are still FFXIV players in FFXIV wearing FFXIV bikinis. If suddenly there is a "Master Chief" suit from Halo going on, then this is out of bounds obviously.

When I was playing Guild Wars 2 I liked it's cleanliness: It was focussed on itself and developing its own style further. There were GW1 references lately, but this made sense. When I saw Yokai Watch here I thought I accidently accessed some fansite of a Final Fantasy and Digimon fan that has no clue about and created his twisted and insane dreamworld of everything he likes combined together instead of a AAA title that should be proud to have an own identity and developing that further so people have memories to XIV as being "that" game with "this" art/lore - which apparentley are not. I see FFXIV as fanservice. Like a restaurant that offers microwave meals of warmed up stuff from the past (XI, XV, XIII events) or from others (Yokai Watch) instead of self-made cuisine. (And yes, I have been to such a joint in my vacation '98. It was absolutely mediocre food)

Driving a flying car is still more FFXIV than many other of the garbage that has been added.

I'm confused. Is one's "immersion" in a fictional world really that important and fragile?
"Don't do it". Is there a way to disable non-FFXIV assets? I am in then. Replace the Regalia with a default Chocobo, disable pets/companions that do not belong here. It works, GW2 has a "default model" feature for low-spec PCs and many people play like that. You look like the same then, but at least no ridiculous external franchises then. I mean, why not? It is just "fragile and fictional" as you just said yourself, so you are with me here I assume from your statement.

But else, what is your statement when "I am not doing it" and I still see it by the others? And yes, immersion is a thing, it's like the corporate/brand identity that is the reason why I am playing FFXIV and not Yokai or Nier Automata. I wonder if you and like-minded even think before typing. Let's have a Tomb Raider cross-over, and then DooM 2: Hell on Earth please because I actually really like and still play this game. But if this happens, the game get's down to software renderer and 320x200@256 colours and 35fps (because that is DooM's limit!) because ...

"WHO NEEDZ IMMERZIONZ. Just don't do it!"

Temple of Qarn DooM - not that we get a Indiana Jones cross event, too now because of that name!

Replace health potions with Half Life medikits and add sniper rifles for some nice Counter Strike experience and your next buffood is a "Long Chicken King Menu", delivered in a Mogry Mailman in red-and-yellow DHL uniform - which let you pay the shipping fees in PayPal Points because Gil are too much Final Fantasy. And the next, improved version of the Regalia will be an electro - because Elon Musk and this Yoshida guy like each other so much!

I know that you guys often wish this game to be a shrill clown fiesta, but the way you advocate for this watering down is just incomprehensible to me. I often wonder and am sure you guys are burnt out of the game and want diversity by watering down this game's style instead of playing those games and let this be a real Final Fantasy title. I mean, just play something else then instead of accepting these changes. I came here because I enjoy it to be Final Fantasy, but it should keep a healthy balance and do not step over a certain level of randmoness, e.g. handgun laserweapons from Star Wars or Super Soakers for our new tank profession?

In LoL you can, for example, turn off their bullshit (Arcade map accents, World Championship accents) to play the game as it is supposed to be. So yes, immersion is a thing.

    Canon dimension hoppers:

    - Gilgamesh is confirmed to be the original from FFV and has the ability to warp from world to world
    - Shantotto from XI had the canon ability to warp herself from world to world, and accidentally allowed an evil clone and a "good" clone (not really) of herself to take her place
    - Lightning from XIII had the canon ability to warp from world to world
    - Noctis from XV has the canon ability to warp.... but how he got to XIV is still being chalked up to a Niflheim experiment that went awry

The other crossovers fall more under the "thin areas of reality leaking into each other." I think of XIV as being not unlike Discwold. On Discworld, the amount of latent magic is so large and overpowering that the very rules of reality are bent, and the barrier between worlds often grows thin, so that ideas and things from other places regularly leak into that world.

For XIV, replace "latent magic" with "aether" and it's much the same. The worldbuilding itself accepts that we are but one of 14 mirror dimensions and we become the immersion breaking dimension hoppers in 5.0 - so other ideas, things, and people hopping dimensions over to ours isn't that strange after all.

For immersion, I don't think MMO's are the best place to get that fix. It's impossible to avoid immersion breaking content because you have no control on whether another player drives by you in that FF15 car... The only thing you can do is try to role-play with other players and avoid crowds, but you can't even avoid the crowds while doing MSQ because the quests are all in the hubs.

For immersion, I look to single player games, or multiplayer games that are more of a controlled environment compared to most MMO's.

So other items break your immersion but not a skimpy potato with a shield and board holding it's own against something 20 times it size? Interesting.
