If you want to die a little inside, the whole "Jump breaks Immersion" thing was a defense of the then producer Tanaka (yes, FFXI Tanaka) when he blundered into some bad publicity by saying that "FFXIV doesn't need to have a [jump button]."

As if I needed any more proof of how out of touch he was.

Kind of a silly reply. Some people want a highly consistent and original fantasy world and crossovers hurt that. Personally, I'm not a fan of them either, as I'd prefer FFXIV just focus on being FFXIV rather than a parade of nostalgia trips, but I realize they're probably going to keep happening.

could be worse the next crossover could be bravely default where you gotta do the same thing over and over seven times but be sure its slightly different.

I like them because usually they are played as other worldly.
as in they came from another world what you thought that this was the only solar system out there?

So if earth in real life was visited by some form of life you going to run out and be like hate to break it to you aliens but you gotta go get off my planet you are messing with my immersion planet earth was already good without you bye see you later.

alien is like but we have a serum that allows you to have super pow..........

    MY IMMERSION NO THANK YOU!!!!

    Joking aside.

Seriously no problem because it doesn't involve the story itself its something on the side that everyone enjoys.

For example Halloween and other holiday events these are earth made things but they are thrown into the world even our language if this was in fact a different world they would not have the same way of communication their holidays would be different.

so immersive argument gets thrown out the window at this point.

Point is just to have fun on the side and get some prizes out of it, then they leave our world example you don't see jack skeleton pumkin head girl cutting people off in a cutscene and asking directions to the nearest exist during a ultros fight even though it probably be funny.

I understand some players like crossover events and their rewards, but there should be a line drawn on what's a fitting crossover and what isn't.

Isn't longer a role playing game when you break character and story rules.
I don't know. Biggs and Wedge have been around since at least 1994's Final Fantasy 6, and they're Star Wars characters. I actually smiled when they showed up with Cid, as it reminded me of my childhood playing the older games. It felt like fan service of other franchises, than ripping me out of immersion.

That's a little different though. I've always seen Biggs and Wedge as more as an easter egg than anything. They've honestly come to be their own characters in the FF franchise pretty much only sharing the name. I wouldn't exactly say it's a crossover when they're not specifically from Star Wars.

I actually agree with the OP and I normally take this stance whenever this topic comes up. I always use PSO2 for example. For those who haven't played it, it began an a sucessor to PSO but then they began having crossovers every freaking month. Anything from Godzilla to Guilty Gear and even FFXIV with Odin randomly showing up as a boss. No backstory or anything, just cool costumes and weapons for your character to win in a gatcha (with real money) or puchase from the market boards and an Emergency Quest where you fight Odin himself. Even now, the game has lost it's identity going from a game about space mercenaries to becoming a high-school, shonen to a high-fantasy game. FFXIV already doesn't really have an identity that much outisde of it's story, cities and some of the characters as most of them are from past games anyway. It's basically a melding pot of FF and SE at this point which I actually enjoy. But the "this person/creature is from another world" thing is getting old.

As far crossovers go, I'd be cool with games that fit the mold of FF. Valkyrie Profile, Bravely Default, past FF games, even some of the mobile games like Mobius and Exvius. I'm still hoping for a Chrono Trigger/Cross-over. The Dragon Quest crossover was cool because DQ and FF are so similar that it fit right in. MH was ok but I feel like it didn't work well having a fight similar to the actual game without the actual gameplay mechanics. Nier feels really dumb...someone mentioned DMC some weeks ago which I feel would be out of place. I enjoy the game as much as the next person but everything doesn't need to be crossed over with.

Sharing names with Star Wars characters isn't the same thing as being Star Wars characters though.

Eh... I go back and forth on this topic. Though if I really want an immersive experience I'll go play a single player game where I don't need to worry about running into someone wearing a Frog suit driving a flying car lol...
