GMs can pull up logs from the chat and go over what was said. Often when you make a report, especially regarding harassment, a GM is pretty quick to contact you, they then ask a series of questions. Usually stuff like "What time did this happen?" "What was said?" "What duty and or thing were you doing at the time?" all to help narrow the search area down. So they can find and review the incident and if it is severe enough, they can pull people into 'jail' and question them. So that's often how they determine harassment.

On the troll thing, no it is not an exploit for trolls. When the GMs do an investigation, they don't just look at the offending party, they look at the whole incident. So if they find that YOU were actually the one being an ass and you're just reporting someone to try and get them in trouble, well then, get ready for the GMs to turn back on you and give you the boot. False reporting is not tolerated and is the quickest and possibly most efficient way to speedrun yourself to perma ban status.

A friend of mine had had a bad day at work, logged in to XIV and got picked on becuase of his materia melds during an omega run.

He snapped and told most of the party to go fk themselves among other things. 60 mins later he was teleported to jail and spoke with a GM, that got him his first and only (so far) strike on his account and nothing remotely close to a 30 day ban.

Which means your FC leader is basically lying. He either did A LOT worse than he says, has been banned before or maybe hasnt actually been banned and just wants to take some time off while pretending it's a ban so people wont bother him for some reason. (I've seen this last one happen)

Funny how people present themselves differently given social situation and people around them. Your FC leader might be one hell of a jerk to randos and you'd never know about it.

If your FC leader was pulled in game from an instance to the jail he violated ToS and SE will disclose what was violated and what the circumstances are. What they wont and will not do is explain why it is a violation. Its not a GMs job to hand hold at that point.

This is how SE opperates. Your FC leader will recieve an email with further information if its a ban, a means of appeal, and other information.

To avoid bans be decent. And dont violate the ToS.
