For all of the criticism 1.0 receives it really was a masterpiece. The only thing XIV has on it is the trust system (and that's being generous).Aside from being pretty barren, copy-pasted and having too many invisible walls, I thought how they handled the open world zones was alright. It was actually relevant because battle leves and behests (now guildhests and instanced) were a viable option for leveling. It was seamless, had open world dungeons although not much in them, had a good variety of layers to the zone design (main part, elevated/upper, underground/lower etc) and there was some difficulty in it since monster levels were varied and can reach past our level cap than set to a certain range like it is now.
The monsters were coded better, too. Some monsters are cowards, some would attack you if you're in their bubble for too long, some would even follow you out of curiosity.
