Blue Mages are Associated with monsters. Blue mages have used so much more than swords. They've used Swords, Whips, Forks, even lances.
Please DO NOT be an FFXI purist and not be able to think realisticly about how these things could be implemented.
So what, we make blue mage based in gladiator, giving it all these tank skills and then a couple of randoms? Yeah, no I don't think so. You have to actually think about how these jobs are going to be built
Building a class/job combo isn't made by OMG IT HAS TO BE THIS! its built by carefully considering what makes it unique. Who said you dont learn by observation? You have to "own" a monster before you can use its abilites. Owning a monster usually entails fighting it first.
What about build ISN'T Blue mage-like about this? Da hell do you even know what a blue mage is?
Omg Quistis you Blue Mage you... whats that your holding. Oh a whip? Hmmm say Quistis how do you learn YOUR magic? Oh items? Really thats pretty neat?
Oh hey Khimari nice SPEAR.
Whoa how do you learn your skills? Lancet? interesting way....
I hope your catching my drift, because your hopelessly lost if you think anything you said about blue mages right there is true.
And they should be turned into a pet class... because? Throw me a bone here.
You are right to call me a FFxi purist because it is the first (and so far only) FF game I've played in depth. I've recently started playing the other games (I am stuck on FFii) in order to have a better understanding of it and so far the only thing I can understand is that the fame of the series is undeserved. About the only good ones I've seen so far is FFxi and FFxiv (although FFi was a good way to pass time). So if I got the weapon portion wrong I apologize.Originally Posted by AceofRains

I have, actually and making it based upon GLA like THF would necessarily need be if (read: when) it gets implemented would be a mistake. I haven't played far enough into FFxiv to know about how the base classes translate into the secondary jobs or the advanced jobs I heard being discussed but BLU has always been different from the start (despite being based upon an age old idea of imitating the forms or taking on strengths of beasts) I would like to see done right this time around.Originally Posted by AceofRuins

I don't have to have been a life long player of the FF series to call you out on the silliness of this idea. First, there's are beasts you can 'own' and those you can not. And if you can't 'own' that monster what then? Secondly, you can't target yourself with attacks in FFxiv, and I can't imagine you can have your beast target you either if (read: when) they ever implement a pet class/job.Originally Posted by AceofRuins

Lame argument. One thing I liked about FFxi BLU is learning spells they learned them. It made the job more involved than other mage(ish) jobs which just read a scroll (which they got priced gouged on by the Auction House) and they learned their spells if they were the right level.Originally Posted by AceofRuins

With BLU you have to be the right level range (skills being up to date helps), go out (most of the time off the beaten path to places others don't go) and actually learn it. What's not to like?
Read: stupid way. And (no disrespect to the LNC and DRG) a mage wielding a lance? That's even stupider than having BLU branch off from GLA. In what sane universe do mages go anywhere near heavy arms? Wait a minute, BLM sometimes use Scythes in FFxi... I retract that objection to the blasphemous image.Originally Posted by AceofRuins

However they do it I hope they do it well. BLU on FFxi is a lot of fun and a bit of a power trip, however it wasn't exactly done right if you get me.Originally Posted by AceofRuin

If you haven't been a player of FF games why don't you inform yourself about the history of a job in full before saying what it should be?And they should be turned into a pet class... because? Throw me a bone here.

Also, monster farms are not at all a wierd concept. You could capture monsters in both FFT and FFTA
In tactics advance the monster farm was something the morpher could use, when you captured an enemy, you could use it's soul as a weapon. You needed a hunter to be able to capture monsters in the first place, and a Beastmaster to be able to further assist bluemages of that series in learning by controling monsters druing combat. ALL of these classes coincide with eachother, and a monster farm so if I were to make them anything, they would stem from a pet class.
As for a spear blue mage, im not exactly for that one since Khimari was also a "Dragoon" but I would actually be fine with BLU gettting the transferable skills from a lancer, to make it a more effective DD type. You shouldn't just chalk it up to a mage wielding a lance, because its not JUST a mage. If you recall some blue magic was based on a factor of physical strength and TP. Mage is just a glorified title for this job.
I think in FFXI Blue Mage just had TOO many skills that were useless. I think FFXIV should focus on giving each enemy type 1 magic that Blue Mages can obtain, but you can only set 3, as the other two skills you should get are the weaponskill and combo affinity. I think this build does alot of justice for the class, you just gotta open your mind to it. Chances are, you'd probably like playing it alot more than FFXI's
