Something where you can feel how much of an advantage you have because of this gear you farmed?

In my experience with MMOS, max level is when the game is supposed to start, not come to an abrupt end. But I think I'm starting to realize that comparing this game to other MMOS is my mistake.
There will be more dungeons and raids added with later patches where you will need that gear - so you can get even better gear for the next set of dungeons and raids.

It is only true for some MMOs that the "real" game starts at level cap. For others, like FFXIV, it is the road to level cap that is the real game - the "end game" here is mostly filler content to keep players busy with the gear treadmill until more story can be written and added. Still, many players seem to enjoy running the dungeons over and over.

As for challenging content - that is what the Savage and Ultimate versions of raids are there for.

No type of hard dungeons to challenge yourself in, or world pvp to put your good gear to use. I guess what I'm struggling to accept is that the only thing you can do with the awesome gear you've farmed is to wait until the next patch to get some use out of it.
well theres a triceratops to farm hunts for on the first and the two gorgeous dragon mounts form innocence and titanya to strive for

If I were you, I'll be glamour hunting or leveling another classes. I came back to the game after several years and there's so many things to catch up to.

Might be worth noting that Savage and Ultimate are the main endgame content of this game, designed for the more challenge oriented players. The normal raid is the story mode, meant for all players, and the Extremes are more casual endgame content which also help with Savage gearing. So in the case of Shadowbringers, the main endgame content hasn't been released yet (this is a design choice to allow people to enjoy the expansion story at their own pace without having to rush to endgame). When Savage comes out, give that a try and then see how long that content lasts for you.

Have you done older side content, or did you just focus on the MSQ? There is a lot of "ex-endgame" content at Lv50, 60 and 70 that is still worth doing for story and glamour, plus access to more roulettes for leveling your classes.

If you enjoyed the story in Shadowbringers, make sure to do the Lv50 Crystal Tower questline if you haven't yet, because it adds some important context - and extra dialogue options at some key cutscenes. (Speak to the 'outlandish man' at the aetheryte plaza in Revenant's Toll for the first quest.)

majong, choco races, battlegrounds, triple triad, lord of verminion, ultimate and savage raids, ex trials.what else we got? crafting, fishing, wolves den, primal wings (or whatever that's called) eureka/diadem like stuff. trying out other classes, deep dungeons, hunts, various collections and achievements. there's a lot of crap to keep you busy if you look around. frankly gear is for glam. it's only actually good for something like one tier of raids. if that's your only goal and nothing else interests you you will probably be bored. but as for doing content, there are ways of making it more challenging, like setting your duty to minimum ilevel so your gear really means nothing. That's actually a better measure of skill.

That is the one major gripe I have with the game as well. You get max bis gear, but there is nothing to do with it. Looking at games like Everquest, there were alternate advancement levels to grind out, where you'd unlock an additional point each time you hit a full exp bar at max level which you could spend on improving stats or even unlocking new abilities. So getting raid gear was awesome because it made the exp grind on non-raid days so much more efficient, so you felt like you got something out of it since you were still constantly improving your character.

I can spend 1-2 weeks farming mounts, minions, cards, but ultimately that's just fluff that doesn't really matter, so I usually end up unsubbing till the next content patch comes around. That's just the way the game is designed.

Many people would say that the "fluff" is the only thing that matters. For them glamour, mounts, minions, and so on, are the important stuff. Getting better at fighting things is just a means to an end.

But it is true that FFXIV isn't really designed to keep you busy every day from the release of one patch to the release of the next. It is designed so that even players with somewhat limited playtime should be able to keep up with the geargrind and be ready when the next patch drops.
