They could easily have a couple variables to the animations. Rings, Boomerangs and Stars.
Or just blur them a little so that it could conceivably anything. If it's spinning fast enough anything will be a ring or a circle.

A master of the art can make all those squares make a circle. Or scissors in this case.

Not really, because if you hurl a scissor as a boomerang, you'd inevitably have it spinning, thus forming a circle.

I'd love to have actual bladed fans as a weapon too.
