Being denied the ability to ask questions in Feast is miserable

Asking questions is one of the most beneficial and necessary steps in learning something. After about a dozen Feast training matches and two victories on WHM and SCH, it sure would help if I could ask questions. I had a lot to ask, and even if I didn't, I bet the people I was matched with would have been glad to offer advice unsolicited.

Some of it would have been helpful. Some of it not so much. Some of it would have been counterproductive, a product of their frustration with whatever noobish mistakes I made....... that they were not permitted to inform me about. I still don't know what I did wrong, some of those matches I had better healing numbers than the winning team's healer. Was it bad DPS or tank? Was it bad luck? Was it a question of positioning, or timing, or resource allocation? Fuck if I know, because the people who could tell me are not permitted to do so.

And for what? To cater to pantywaists who become emotionally distressed when people say mean things about their play in a video game? Do such people even want to engage with PvP content other than to check some box or acquire some silly pixel-points?

If there is a compelling reason for player communication to be disabled I would be very interested to hear it.

If they disabled chat in leveling roulette for that reason I would understand. I would disagree with the decision but I would also acknowledge the logic to be sound.

In the case of PvP, SE has made content which is explicitly selected by a majority of players looking for competition, supplemented by occasional spikes of players looking to check some box or add some sparkly thing to their inventory. In the PvP segment of FFXIV content the priority should be the needs of players who desire competition rather than escapism, roleplaying, power fantasies, nostalgia, or whatever else has drawn them to FFXIV.

I mean... I don't expect them to put a lot of resources into PvP. Their major target demographics aren't PvPers. However, whatever resources they do choose to devote to that segment should be employed with that segments interests in mind to maximize returns.

I still really think PvP could benefit a lot from having some sort of Training instance. Something low stress, where nobody's worried about not getting their rewards, fill it up with NPCs or all those afk bots or whatever. A more chill environment to actually learn the maps, learn job synergy, tactics, etc. I guess probably would entail more dev resources than they probably think would benefit; no rewards or anything, maybe it wouldn't get used much.

But, personally, biggest hurdle for me even dipping a toe into PvP is having to go in blind. On some level, I do recognize that it's a somewhat simplified system, I can pick up on my own job mechanics in the Den. But, throwing other players in the mix, whose success/enjoyment of a match may depend in some part on my understanding of what's going on. I'd just as soon not get tossed into that mess.

Although, I guess, strictly speaking, without chat, can't be bothered by anyone having a bad time...

Dude you assume you'd get constructive feedback or tips in Feast. You won't. No one is going to make the effort to teach you how to play. You're just going to get heckled at and berrated until you quit completely.

I don't think having chat is worth the aggravation of having to be forced to listen to toxic babies who can't handle losses in a videogame.

With that said, I'm fine with an option for people to opt in and out of feast chat. Id that happens, I hope you enjoy and "learn" from the thousands of "l2p" and various profanities hurled your way.

I believe this. A friend of mine that used to PvP often told me that their own random teammates in the Feast would go out of their way to sabotage and throw away the match if they didn't like the way you played.

How does having a chat or not having that chat change the behavior of that player ? If anything, it would be easier to report him if he insults somebody, as GM can deal faster with chatlog proof.

    __
It would help if it would be possible to instantly mute players in-match chat and player-quickchatpings separately on the scoreboard. Introduce a better way to 1click report pvp issues and deal with them more swiftly. Every game has toxic players, it just becomes an issue when there is no punishment or superdetailed and slow report options like atm. Just rightclick on playername, report, reason, text and done would be better.

Tbh I think SE is more concerned about having experienced players prepare chat macros that increase their chance of winning than about the toxicity issue. They want to force a low skill ceiling to appeal new players.
with sideeffect: less work for a GM, so there are reasons why they don't like to add it again. I think however, that the possibility to talk with other PvP players without having to add them as friend, is pretty vital to the mode itself and the playerbase in PvP, or it stays a faceless community and only develops outside of FF14 in discords.

They're not wrong. When chat is active in pvp the first instinct of many is to belittle, berate and do everything in their power to prop themselves up at the expense of others. Failing that they will piss moan and insult their teammates when losing while doing little to nothing to put forth effort.

It's kind of funny...and sad when people will act like the rear end of an incontinent horse then wonder why stuff like chat is revoked. Like, how dare consequences occour for my actions? If ya don't want privileges revoked try not acting like a raging 12 year old.

You jest, but not only would I learn what things elicit their frustrated jabs, I would learn about the players. Who is worth hanging out with, and who is too lacking in self-control to be worth the effort. After most of a decade of playing League of Legends, I can honestly say that I have learned a lot from team chat, no matter how much mockery and invective gets thrown around. It's one of the advantages of living by the adage 'sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me'.

Smugly championing the removal of privileges for all on account of the actions of some reflects poor character. Poor logic as well, because even in FFXIV's "friendly, welcoming" PvE environment there is no lack of snide, deliberately hostile commentary. This morning, not even twelve hours after the content was released, I watched a tank babyrage at healers failing mechanics in the fourth Eden raid. "bruh....", "BRUH", "BRUHHHH", and so forth after they got punted off the platform, leading into full sentences of bitching and moaning. Were your logic to be utilized outside of PvP, it would surely mean the removal of chat from all duty finder content.
