Here are my 2 cents, Ive been a tank since 2.0, no main tank, I play them all, thats a few years tanking and have played all styles.

My conclusion so far is that lazy-tanking got way easier this time around. If your sole purpose is to keep aggro and apply a defensive cooldown every once in a while then its easier now than it has ever been. Your party will probably be happy with you if this is all you do (im not cunting hardcore content) and you can watch netflix while tanking most content in the game, like 95% of the current content.

Optimal tanking remains fun and engaging.

Hi, I joined in Stormblood and started as a GLD and later settled on a WAR. Not as old as some of you folks

But! I have to say that once I got into doing SB raids and dungeons, and generally just stuff near the end of HW and throughout SB & Post SB I didn't really use my enmity combo at all. Why would I when it generates less meter, does less damage, doesn't give me an admittedly small heal, and only generates just about as much enmity as the Maim > Storm combos?

It just felt like dead weight on my bars that were only ever useful if the BLM decided to go nuts without using Diversion first, and even then most of the time I was still able to hold enmity on the boss. Perhaps it was different for other tanking roles but I can't imagine it given other's testaments throughout the thread.

Personally, I think saying that enmity keeping wasn't important is wrong, but there's also some truth to it. It is important, in the sense of the initial pull and swapping, but otherwise it's... just something in the background because keeping the boss hitting you is a nonissue compared to learning positioning, rotating cool-downs properly between AAs and Tankbusters, etc.

So I have to disagree with many of the points brought up about tanking feeling non-involved because of the changes to tank stances and enmity combos.

As someone whose been tanking since 2.0 I like the changes and how far we've come, it's streamlined, and fun, no more do I have to go into Grit with a mana cost > DA + Powerslash then never use it again that was never fun. To everyone who says that aggro management is part of the challenge as a tank before 5.0 it wasn't it meant the neurons were firing and you were breathing real tanking came from figuring out how to get the best positioning on a boss, CD management, DPS uptime to help your group, group mitigation (SiO, Reprisal, etc), I dunno how many times on prog and clutch moments i've used TBN to save someone from death.
