You answered your own question there buddy. Their design philosophy has been "any Job can complete any content". They wan't to avoid the "leper class" or "Balanced so poorly having this Job in your party is an active detriment (looking at you FFXI)" phenomenon endemic in other MMO's. We do have it slightly better because you can change classes on the fly, but no one want's their favorite class to be on the bottom.

Also "Meta exists so lets just make it worse" isn't the answer.

Yeah, but they majorly stuffed up when they decided it was acceptable for some classes to engage with a good portion of the content (all solo content) with approximately 4 buttons (1 dot, 1 nuke, 1 aoe, and your heal of choice). I’m not about to jump ship, but I’m certainly considering jumping role. All metrics suggest that the majority of AST and SCH players are pretty upset with SE at the moment.

AST and SCH might not be lepers for other people to include (although I’ve seen some suggestions that ASTs are at the moment) but they feel like lepers to play, especially when compared to what the jobs used to be.

What is a leper?

Someone who suffers from leprocy: a contagious disease that causes your flesh to decay. Socially, someone no one wants to touch with a 10 foot pole. In a group setting, maybe ATSs are lepers because they have significantly weaker healing than the other two healers, while also providing less rdps than a WHM provides personal dps. From a role standpoint, maybe monk is a leper, since from what I understand it’s not very rewarding to play in this expansion.

Admittedly I’m more comparing it to Heavensward SCH, since that was the last version I played seriously. I didn’t like the changes in Stormblood, but came back a few months before ShB and found my groove again. I’m glad some people at least are enjoying the job in its current state. I’m still planning to level SCH to 80, to see how it feels, but I’m trying to start working on other options, too.

While I’m here, may as well ask: anyone got suggestions as to what to try next? As SCH, I loved risk/reward choices like going into OG cleric stance, or choosing whether to spend my stacks offensively or defensively. I also liked the added challenge of micromanaging my pet’s position, embraces, etc on its own cooldown, although I’m guessing I won’t find anything like that. My current plan is to try tanking. Probably DRK or GNB since I won’t have to level them to 15 before starting to really learn to use their kit.

I have totally given up on their ability to design creatively. However, they have restored my faith in the ability to write stories creatively with this expansion. I primarily play through the story and then a bit of play around at the end game and leveling other jobs. Once I get bored, I cancel until toward the end of the expansion, when I return, and finish the story- getting ready for the next one. This really allows me to enjoy the good part of the game (story) and avoid the bad parts of the game (total lack of creativity in design and extreme repetition due to rigid "formula")

I'm gonna be honest, it's like you guys want them to reinvent the game every expansion. MMOs live and die by reliability. If they change it too much, then people don't know what they're signing up for. There's a formula because then people know that there will be SOMETHING they enjoy.

Personally I'd like to see more Hybrid classes and some 2 person instances dungeons with the new Trust System.
