Fishing Desynth Conundrum

I have a friend who is stuck at about 300 desynth for culinarian. He's not much of a fisher so I supply him with fish to desynth. The problem is there is a huge gap between the lvl 70 fish ~320 and the new lvl 71 shadowbringers stuff ~390.

How can I help him bridge the gap?

Usuginu Octopus. They will get him to 340 or so. From there Tinker's Calm and Bacon Broth will bridge the gap to 390 fish. I just did the grind. Isle of Bekko. The Octopus have a unique bite. They have the hard crunch on the pole and I ignored all other bites as reeling them in took longer by a large margin. I ended up burning through around 600 Live Shrimp and got around 120 Octo. It took me to slightly under the 340 mark and I began the process of blowing up all my 390's. When I stopped using Octo I was getting .05 per in Desynth and I still couldn't reach 390 opening so Tinker's Calm and Bacon Broth are not optional but he will only need 2 of each, HQ and he can burn stacks of 390-400 from there on in.

Some of the 390 fish are dirt cheap, like 100 gil and under.

On my fisher alt I just bought a batch, did Tinker's Calm and Bacon Broth, and blew a LOT of cheap fish up.

Heck yeah. Most of the other 320s are more painful (mirage mahi is time limited, triplespine is even more time limited, alligator snapping turtle wants fair skies, redtail is time limited and requires mooch, saltmill is a mooch of a time-limited, bonsai fish is time limited, ribbon eel requires mooch, red prismfish is time limited, elder gourami requires mooch, firelight goldfish requires mooch from red prismfish, indigo prismfish requires mooch from the time limited violet prismfish, green prismfish is time limited, and most of your other i320 choices are big fish). As a bonus, if you end up with excess U Octopus, they will sell well (both for desynth or for CUL making Taku-yaki).

You can just use your retainers to get Usuginus. I did that to bridge the gap between SB and ShB fish pretty easily.

I do not really understand why someone who is not much of a fisher does CUL desynthesis.

probably in the hope that SE will make CUL desynth great again by adding rare swimsuits/mats for rare swimwear once again. which i highly doubt.
