For talking it's too late, but after playing GW2, I really think this is the worst aspect of this game.
As Lalafell, there are basically three major types of voices: A very calm, human-like voice (like Pipin), the rough one (like Papalymo) and the squeeky, high-pitched one that is just annoying.
Thanks to Papalymo, I can imagine how my Lalafell sounds like in combination with certain emotes, but else, it massively lacks any sort of immersion to me. And no, it not a bad thing to have your character go "hah!" or "hupp" when jumping occassionally. Right now I have exactly 4 SFX in battle: "Ah!", "Ouh", "Huuaah" and "Hua". And the pain sounds are playing so rarely that falling damage triggers it more often than the actual fight.
It is also not too expensive (for such a pricey game FFXIV is) to record more lines at least for emotions (sic; not emotes only). But it feels like they recorded some in 2011 and that's it, never again. With optional sliders in the menu or frequency to set up how often we could hear ourselves, I'd like to have more lines going on, and since GW2 (I pick this game for my personal experiernce and reference), nobody can tell me it's "impossible" when they have 2 genders a 5 species with full voice acting in 3 languages going on, to give us more dynamic voiceFX for the battle.
And "imaging hearing our WoL talking" is funny when you have to select a VOICE in the character creation just to be a mute. So YoshiP is just talking bullcrap in that matter (again. Like server issues, engine issues, PlayStation issues - it's just the money). I can barely even imagine how my character could sound like if I would not have those maybe 13 seconds of emotes added up.
Sincerely,
