It's inevitable at this point that will make it's appearance in FFxiv so I thought I'd make an introduction for the Azure Lore, that is the lore of Blue Mages. If you have your own suggestion for introduction of the Job class be sure to share it here, or to share any other thoughts on it. So without further ado:
Blue Mage, Fell Mage, Primal Mage; there are as many names for these nomadic mages as there are gods for the people of the world. They are instantly recognizable by their blue vestments and their curved blades. Historically, Blue Mages have been feared and regarded with suspicion for their worship of the primals, primarily Atomos, from which they have learned their distinctive fell magic.
Typically the city-states of Eorzea have learned to cope with their presence and come to a grudging respect for the independent mages, coming into conflict with them only on rare occasions due to the Blue Mages nomadic and reclusive nature.
Until recently that is. The Blue Mages have been targeted for extermination in the recent increase of the Garlean empire's aggression, ostentatiously for heretical practices. While it's true that worship of any god other than the state sponsored deity is banned under threat of reeducation or death, the truth of their sudden interest in the Blue Mages has more to do with the threat that the Garleans discovered them to be during their initial encounter.
A few years ago a group of Blue Mages went to bare witness to the Primal Migarsomr, which had destroyed a Garlean fleet of warships. There they discovered, to their horror, that (like the Primals) their magitek that they were so proud of was mostly ineffectual on the Blue Mages. It took an entire legion of mechanized cavalry units to subdue the six grand masters of Blue Magic.
With their freedom now in jeopardy, the Blue Mages have aligned themselves with the city-states of Eorzea both in order to protect themselves and to seek out those with the fortitude, will power, strength, and determination to harness their fell magics.
