why only PLD aoe combo doesnt require target lock?

not saying anything but it weird me out. i level both PLD and DRK (a bit GNB too) so everytime i had enough with PLD i use my DRK and i always forgot that for my 2nd aoe combo i need to lock on target first.

it shouldnt need to lock to target right? i mean it hit everything around you so why the need to target this one particular enemy?

Neither PLD, DRK, nor GNB require target lock for their aoe combos.
If anything it's PLD that should have target lock when aoeing because that's how they gain oath gauge.

DRK needs a target for Flood of Shadow and Abyssal Drain while AoE'ing, but the combo itself doesn't need a traget.

Warrior's Overpower
Darknights Abyssal drain...and arguably salted earth, though that is a ground target
Paladins Confiteor (I haven't gotten it to 80, but my friend insists it requires a lock, and the tooltip seems to suggest that)

Your friend is correct, Confiteor requires a target and will do its aoe around that target. And as the range is only 5y it is key that you select the target that is in the middle of the pack.
