Dying while Flying

I have a question to see if I either glitched or is working as intended.

In Rak Tika, we managed to pop the SS Rank there, Forgiven Rebellion. I was flying over it while relaying my Linkshells when suddenly somebody pulled it. When that happened, the screen faded to black, then I appear at the 1st Aetheryte dead! It took a while for someone to Rez me, but after, it took forever to get through all the stupid trees and rocks that get in the way of flying and totally missed getting credit as it died as I arrived.

Totally pissed off, I could not believe what just happened and wondered if it was glitched. I was the only this happened to. After doing some thinking, I began to wonder if I got killed while flying, instead of your body dropping down, that you appear dead at the closest Aetheryte. Has anybody died while flying and confirm what I believe happened or did I get glitched?

Anytime you get knocked off a mount in flight, it puts you at the starting aetheryte. Death, on a multiseater and the mount user teleports/enters a dungeon.

Honestly surprised it's the first time you've seen this.


It's not a bug, it's to keep your character from glitching out of reality.

I have never been killed in mid air. I can’t think of any way of it happening other than Damage over Time prior to this, but yes it’s my 1st time dying in mid air after 5 years.

How often is anyone sat flying in front of something long enough to die? Only a real problem with these at-level S ranks, prolly.

Happened first time to me this week when I flew past the A tank in ruby sea as one of the new jobs. Done a area aoe as I was going past and killed me. I got spawned at the ruby price (gate to Kugane) before spawning home. Was interesting as I thought I’d just de mount and fall to the ground and wasn’t expecting the screen change and to be over at the ruby price with a message about being teleported to nearest aetheyte or something.

I meant getting kicked to the aetheryte while being on a flying mount. Happens all the time i'm sure, with dungeon queues and such when people are on 2 seaters and the cars.

It's pretty easy to die while mounted with how insanely hard the hunt marks hit with their AoEs in ShB.

I make it a note to give them a very wide berth if I'm approaching them while they're already pulled by someone.

It is not hard to get killed in mid-air. You just need to aggro some mob that has ranged attacks, and then stay in range long enough for it to kill you.
Usually it is simple to avoid dying - just fly away far enough - but if one stays in place one can get killed easily enough.

Not so much, if you're traveling as a gatherer or something and forget that you have low hp/def you end up dead pretty fast in the higher levels. Enemies can hit you at a fair distance even in air.
