Agreed...I made this mistake when I first started..as much as it sucks sometimes no communication at all is no way to play this game....plenty of single player games out there just saying...
The problem with this is that you're throwing out the good along with the bad. It's an overkill solution. It's useful in the event someone is being abusive and for some reason kicking isn't an option (people won't go along with it / don't feel comfortable initiating one / it's a role that might take awhile to replace / etc.), but it really shouldn't be applied as an automatic preventative measure, because then it harms all of the GOOD groups that are out there, too. It's the game equivalent of walking around with earbuds 24/7, which I find to be a fairly rude and antisocial sort of behaviour. To each their own, of course, but it's worth recognizing that it shouldn't be a default choice for most people out there. My friend who got me into the game is fairly antisocial in XIV, but even he's never gone to the level of blocking party chat. These are amongst the most condescending posts that I've seen in a long, long time. So if one wishes to avoid toxic, trolling behaviour, and the community and / or the developers aren't doing enough to curb it, one should be an adult and move on and or stop playing online games entirely? What horrible solutions, and is close to a defense of player toxicity of online games. "Yeah, well, it's going to happen, so either move on or stop playing." These are the kind of attitudes that keeps that extremely negative behaviour around.
Chat window hidden was, and still is, the best way to play the game.
I also think that there's a difference between occasional toxic behaviour, and routine toxic behaviour. It's difficult to make the argument that groups in XIV are particularly toxic, especially for the level of content (sub-EX) at which one can turn off chat without severely hampering performance. It's a rather rare occurrence. Because of this, yeah, I think the proper approach is to just turn the other cheek. More potent measures like preventative chat-blocking are, in my mind, only appropriate in environments featuring routine toxicity - but this simply doesn't occur in FFXIV unless an individual is doing something to legitimately bring on the criticism. In other words, I don't agree with the idea that we should seek to avoid any toxic behaviour ever - not because XIV is an online game and we should expect it, but because it severely limits the experience. The approaches inevitably throw out the good with the bad, and I just don't view that as good advice for life, be it in-game habits or otherwise.
I have an alt on Crystal. Before the expansion dropped, the trend I noticed wasn't salt but just an over all dip in skill level (specifically mech knowledge) while the people who were mostly playing for the social aspect scrambled to finish story and grind for gear. It got to the point that I stopped doing the raids altogether. However there was very little complaining going on, just an air of 'lets just get through this.'
With that said, you're likely getting salt from the power grinders. And a lot of time it depends on time of day. A lot of players have a limited window in which to play, which is where a good deal of this attitude is coming from. I have experienced this mildly on Aether, but so far it hasn't been bad. I play in the evenings though, when things are generally more laid back. Sorry you keep getting the short end. Perhaps using PF to get a roulette group going would be better. That way you can meet the people up front. Should't be too hard to form with how everyone is scrambling to level right now. Hope it works out for you. <3
Are you informing the group that someone with them is new? Cause if your not saying anything at the start of the run and just letting the new players lack of experience hinder everyone, then yes their going to get chewed out about their failures.
Note: Taking advice from a players alt, is like taking advice from a voice in a dark room. Criticism is a two way street remember that!!
They shouldn’t need to, the game will automatically state if there is a first time bonus.
If tank (and healer) are experienced and rushing ahead - no subjective negative bias intended - it's kinda awkward to decide whether you type something or focus on following them.
@topic: As someone who's forced to do dungeons in order to continue the main story and tries to overcome his "past" dungeon/"forced" group-o-phobia, I had up to Ifrit to my own surprise no negative backlash (most runs were silent ones) as probably the worst player in the group, even when I didn't make it in time to walk out of Ifrit's big AoE thingy (using sprint didn't somehow cross my mind). Yes, I know normal (MSQ) dungeons are faceroll easy and whatnot but generally even easy ones cause (negative) stress in me just for being dungeons and my bare minimium degree of decency for trying to not being a "burden". Makes me kinda dread to level alt-jobs that are non-DPS.
