If it could have been fixed with regex alone, the problem would have been solved a long time ago. They need A.I.

I severely doubt regex was ever used to begin with. They started filtering specific messages, bots responded by adding randomly generated characters at the end of the messages completely bypassing it and nothing changed since.

The reliance on automation and latent detection ban waves is why we're in this situation at all. I don't know who any of these businesses think they're helping with this system because it's not the players. It's the same garbage in any game that isn't directly dealing with it.

Yeah...

They have 24/7 GM support that could easily be used to keep the bots under control but they've convinced themselves that automated measures the STF uses are somehow more effective when the bots oft aren't exhibiting any kind of abnormalities that can be detected at a server or client side level.

Simply observing them first-hand for a minute or two is enough to expose them once you recognize their quirks.

I feel like SE could benefit with some machine learning tools to combat this. Something as simple as when you report someone for RMT the last thing they said in chat; be it tell, shout, etc., needs to be hit with a flag that moderators can see on the back end. It would then show up on a window showing the player's name and what they said last every time they were flagged for RMT. They can then trace this character to the account and proceed to ban it. It doesn't need to wait for a wave ban but can be done on the spot because you have proof from multiple players flagging them for saying the same thing.

Honestly if I had to hazard a guess RMT likely wouldnt exist at all if players werent greedy and consistently asking prices that were exhorbitant to say the least. anytime you see items listed for insanely high prices you can be fairly certain theres going to be rmt activity going on in short order. I mean yeah you can gather up a decent chunk of gil but honestly what are you going to spend it all on Housing? Good luck on that since really thats about the only point in having insane amounts of gil for. Everything else thats on the MB can be earned in the game through hard work and leveling your own crafting /gathering jobs the problem is when you have an abundance of greedy people and an abundance of lazy people or people that just dont have much fun at all doing those kinds of things you get a system that will be exploited by RMT in short its a endlessly perpetuating cycle that really will never end.
