Cool character, written bad. Only real issue I have with the story.

On the topic of Ran'jit's eyes, I was reminded strongly of the Disney villain Shan Yu, from Mulan. He was never implied to be anything other than human, either; the animal-like eyes were just a way to make him seem more threatening.
Unless we learn otherwise, I'd say Ran'jit's eyes are just an aesthetic choice, much like Vauthry's over-the-top obesity. In Ran'jit's case, it plays up his role as a hunter and predator.
I similarly didn't think there was anything up with his eyes, until I read the description on Thancred's buffs/debuffs during the duel. Him having a sort of aether sight would explain seeing through illusions and why Thacred slowing/halting the flow of aether in his own body would make him invisible to Ran'jit int he middle of a desert in broad daylight.
One thing that confuses me about his first appearance. Why let the crystal exarch go? He just helped to spring Minfilia out of Eulmore custody and help the WOL and Friends escape to Il Mehg. I would think the time for diplomacy is passed and he could just capture the CE. Afterall the CE even says he's out of tricks now after stopping Ran'jit from giving chase.

That sounds like a "Not my call to make" moment. Taking on some upstarts trying to free Minfillia is one thing. Attacking the Crystal Exarch is another entirely. One thing that confuses me about his first appearance. Why let the crystal exarch go? Not to mention that if he wasted time with the Crystal Exarch he would give Thancred and Minfilia time to vanish again. He has been chasing after her for 3 years since her escape and has not been able to get his hands on her. He only got his hands on her when she split off from Thancred to head towards the Crystarium. He did not want to allow that vanishing act to happen again. He can deal with the Crystal Exarch at any time, it is not like the Crystarium has any soldiers on his level or the level of the troops at his command.
I think ran'jit came off as too powerfull and granted he used some cheap moves when we first met. But he isn't anything like zenos or ascians. Quite frankly the wol should have kicked his ass one two three that first meet.
i think he was wary of exarch while exarch said he is out of tricks he knows that the exarch has been alive for a very long time perhaps longer than even him. and cant be sure he doesnt have a way of protecting himself.

Notably, Emet-Selch assumes he has the Exarch comfortably under his thumb as a hostage, and the Exarch then pulls out the ace in the hole of seven other heroes that ultimately allows us to overcome Hades. Ran'jit was right to be wary.
This is basically why I think we'll learn more about Ran'jit in future patches, he may even possibly come back somehow. Yotsuyu was also written bad in 4.0, and got more fleshed out in subsequent patches
Unlike Yotsuyu though in Doma Castle we have a body though. And he did get some fleshing out with his motivations, not wanting to see another of his 'Minfilia Daughters' die in vain fighting the Light. Also, please don't remind me of the amnesia Tsuyu arc I don't want anything like that again.
