Extreme Data Usage on Metered Connection

Hi all! Hope this is the right place to post this! I was having connection issues last night on my desktop so I switched over to my metered Wifi connection on the same system. In just under 2 hours of playtime FFXIV consumed over 7gb of data. Photo attached for reference.

Now this was my desktop PC - I've played off mobile tethering before with my laptop and never had an issue like this - so I was curious if anyone knew why this would happen on my desktop? No patches were installed, I just switched connections from LAN to Wifi when I started having D/C issues. For reference - I ran a single dungeon instance and a few MSQs. Again, the above image is solely from last night's less than 2 hour session!

That is likely because of the patch itself. It was about 7.5 GB. On Average, the amount of bandwidth used is less than 10kb/s, even in congested areas.

Everything the game downloads, outside of launcher/game updates, is in a text string, then your PC converts it into the game uses resources on your local machine.

Could you help me to understand a little bit better ? Will this always be the case then or was it just that 1 time? Because I did not download the patch over the Wi-Fi connection, I downloaded the patch via the lan connection proir. I played for an entire week on Wi-Fi last week before the patch and only used 50MB for the entire week.

Also! Mine shows ffxivlauncher.exe and yours shows ffxiv_dx11.exe. Could that have something to do with it?

The launcher is the launcher/updater. FFXIV_ DX11.exe is the game.

Your overcap on data was for sure from downloading the game. I'd say your meter connection was monitoring the wrong connection or you had accidently still been connected. If you were tethering, check your tethering device for its data usage and not the PC itself.

Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

I can't speak for what you did or did not download on what network, but the data size you are reporting lines up with the size of the patch. It would make sense that you are seeing that much on your metered connection.

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

Thank you. I checked my phone and it does not reflect the size of the download is it must be a glitch. Thank you!
