Most of the times that it's been useful to me were because of crappy healers.

Drain healed 80% of an 80 potency attack. You were better off killing whatever it was, or putting it to sleep. If its a dungeon boss, thats an issue with the healer.
An 80 potency attack at my level (78) would be the equivalent of 2,750ish potency attack. You would heal yourself for 2,200. My health pool is 65k.
Drain would heal you by 3%... The server tick heals you more than that.
Its unlikely that the old drain will save you over "the crappy healers."
Ask for adjustments to the content, ask for adjustments to self sustain, but asking for old Drain is just a waste of energy, and I'm one of the people who are just saddened completely with the loss of so many role skills. To me Erase was gold and just undertuned and undervalued.
Drain was neat, but it is definitely under-tuned in its former version. It was never a good idea. I could see a buff to it, to increase its potency to 125 and heal 100% of it, but anything short of that is just too little too late. Even that is pretty mediocre. Since SMN damage is now a base of 200, I think it would make allot more sense at this potency. A separate sustain option would be better.
I converted Physick into potency for SMN btw. It wass about 26 potency at the end of STB with i400 WD. Drain in comparison is 64. Its not doing much better.

I also miss BLM having some kind of solo sustain for adventuring in the overworld that isn’t chocobo-based. Drain was nearly useless but it did save me a couple times in open world quests or fates or whatever.
Here’s what I want: either make Scathe upgrade into (instant cast) Drain, or make Lucid Dreaming restore HP as well as MP.

Ok, so, mostly I'm in agreement here. Through SB, I'm not sure it ever saw any use from me, besides "for fun." The heals from it basically never covered whatever incoming damage you probably have in a situation where you might think Drain could be useful.
BUT! I have seen exactly one scenario where Drain may have still served a purpose. PotD (and probably HoH I guess?) floors with the "No regen" effect. Hey, I know, everything here is a bit paper, and killing things faster would probably still be the better option. But. If you've got nobody that can heal, and you don't want/have potions to rely on, it might've done, like, a little something, maybe.
In a party it was probably useless but I did use it very often for solo content especially early on when soloing elite mob FATEs. It definitely had its uses in solo gameplays, sad to see it go, it felt like something a blackmage would have. . .
Really?. If you have a tool that can keep you alive and you don't use it in a situation where you'll die if you don't, then you're being a bad player. And once you're dead, you're doing NO DPS. It's just as dumb as standing in an aoe that will one-shot you because moving means interrupting your spell cast.

Drain was such a bad tool that you neglected your fundamental job function by using it. Doubly true for BLM since they had very little to offer in the way of party utility, making DPS the only reason for including them.Really?. As others have pointed out, the heal was awful to the point that you'd have to sit there and spam it in order to recover significant HP. If you're spamming Drain, you're not doing meaningful damage and have no reason to be there. Better to take the death and get a party with healers who are awake, because it would save more time.
Eh, takes less time to use Drain, stay alive, and finish the fight. And, if we wipe anyway, we were going to wipe whether I used Drain or my normal spells. If I keep myself alive, though, that takes strain off the [admittedly subpar] healers, and can sometimes make the difference. In Omega, doing less damage in this scenario can also actually be beneficial since it usually happened during the phase where we're fighting Male and Female, and killing one a significant amount of time before the other can be problematic, so delaying that while the healers or rdms get people back on their feet is hardly a bad thing.Drain was such a bad tool that you neglected your fundamental job function by using it. I agree Drain, in general, was bad. It doesn't change the fact that there were a few rare situations where it was actually very useful anyway. Like I said earlier, I've saved fights where things had gone wrong by spamming Physick before. It was extremely rare, but it happened. Does that mean I want Drain and cross-class Physick back? Not really, though something to provide a little extra help in forced solo content would be kinda nice, and that's where Drain felt like it mainly belonged. A tool to help us out with forced solo content. Though, to be fair, we didn't used to have a buff giving us a sizable hp regen in the past. That helps a lot to make up for jobs that don't really have any self-sustain in solo content. Back before we had that and before we had drain, I remember having to solo a fight on BLM by kiting with SCATHE. Ugh. X3
Conversely, if you ever find yourself in a situation (in solo content) that you need to use Drain, you're being a bad player.Really?. As it was, it was a rubbish skill that either needed changing, or removing. Even a triplecast Drain yielded about 20% of your health back and you still had to cast it over 5-6 seconds and by that point, your healer should have you covered or in the case of solo content, the server healclick.
Hon, we didn't used to have a regen buff in solo content. This made certain solo content, even job specific quests, extremely challenging on certain jobs. It's really not that different from the fact that while Titan-Egi was pretty much always shit, the removal of Titan-Egi as an actual tank pet had people legitimately worried about how one would do quite a few of the solo duties in both the summoner job quests and MSQ as Summoner.Conversely, if you ever find yourself in a situation (in solo content) that you need to use Drain, you're being a bad player.

You're also ignoring the fact that more than half the general population of the game *are* in fact bad players (which is fine, they have a right to enjoy the game, too), and if there's any content that it's reasonable to give them an extra boost on, it's *solo* content that's intended for *everyone* to enjoy.
