It is really silly that because a lot of people are on, a 'preferred' server is not permitting new character creation.
However, it is par for Square Enix's abysmal customer service.

Here to agree with OP that this is absolutely and completely ridiculous. You should not have to wait until "non-peak" times to make a character, ever. This is the only MMO I've played in more than a decade where this has ever been a problem I've experienced. You're getting really mad when it not only doesn't affect you, but is easily remedied. The servers aren't full, they're just under strain right now from increased traffic. And if new people want to play so bad, they can make their characters at non-peak times. Wake up early before work or school, load in the saved character appearance data, pick a server, start it, then just shut the game off. It'll skip the opening cutscene and you'll be able to start playing for real later.
Frankly it's baffling that anyone would defend this being how things work here.
Golly I love ground zero complaining. If masses of people want to play a game, no hot fix in the universe that I know of will magically fit them all.
Went to a parade and (lol) it rained. Target, a very large store with multiple floors in some areas, had to close because literally thousands of people were trying to get in to either buy umbrellas, rain gear or just get out the rain. They just can't poof 10 floors and space out of nothing. The parade is over, the rain is gone and I bet you that Target is up and running just fine now.
To be honest, I wanted to make this a few weeks ago when the last unoffical census came out and I did the math to see that NA servers have almost twice as many active players per capita verses JP. This is not "ground zero complaining". This is "Hey this is a problem that has just gotten worse. Why did EU get servers but not NA?".Golly I love ground zero complaining. If masses of people want to play a game, no hot fix in the universe that I know of will magically fit them all.

I actually don't get why their are more Japanese servers than na as well ,seeing as there are more na players than jp.
Probably because Yoshi did say na players tend to new patch log/ presumably raid log while jp players log on more overall.
