When will NA get more shards?

Crystal data center has a few servers that are not congested yet. Start a new character outside of prime time and you should be fine. SE shouldn't add any servers. Ya see kids when the hype starts to die down a bit people won't login and MAGICALLY you will be able to login to just about every server again! WOW! OMG! LOGICAL THINKING!

This has nothing to do with queues. It has to do with the fact that there's no reason for NA to have so few shards. JP has a heck of a lot more shards and the same size player base. And there should NEVER be a time when a player can't make a character at least on some server. Why would someone buy a game that they wouldn't be able to play? Imagine that you just bought FFXIV and yet you can't make a character anywhere. That's horrible for a company.

I’m pretty sure this is just a measure to prevent severe congestion right now. Stormblood’s launch was no fun for anyone. Also they DID create more worlds.

Only for EU. For NA, servers just got shuffled into the new data center.

I do agree that it'll likely die down in a few days. I also agree that it's probably more limited than it may have been previously, to prevent the problems of previous launches. And, while it's understandable to not want to dedicate resources to alleviating this temporary problem if the stable population is considerably less, it does remain sensible to have servers that are reasonably open in each region. Even at this hour, late night Eastern, late evening Pacific, there's only 4 such worlds available on Crystal.

The new data center is great. Shuffling servers, maybe the limiting capacity, it's all gone pretty well, this launch has been remarkably smooth. But they do also kinda need some new player capacity during an expansion launch like this. And while "try during dead hours" might work for some, it can also be expected that for others, it will mean not finding any opportunity to get into the game if they aren't available during those hours.

As it stands now, this is a very bad problem for new customers unless they have some code that will still place them somewhere if they are a first time player. Hopefully they have something like this, otherwise, this is not good.

They really should. My friend just got the game and can’t make a char and guess what? His time is ticking down.

You shouldn’t have to wake up at odd hours to create a character on a p2p game.

As I said in another thread, SE seems reluctant to add servers until ALL the servers in a geographic data center have fairly high populations.
So don't expect more NA servers until the last few low-populated NA servers get filled up.

Probably never. There's congestion now, but unless the congestion stays, it makes no sense to increase server cost for a temporary problem. FFXIV has ever been friendly to the fair weather player-base; by now, you'd think people would be used to the large influx of players that just never come back until it's expansion time again.

For the record, the "shards" terminology for different worlds/dimensions is only for within the game. Not for the different identical server-worlds on a data centre.

(Or if it makes it easier to picture, each server "world" has its own set of shards.)

But "shard" has been used as a synonym for "server" in several other MMOs for many, many years.
