Anyone Else Getting WOW Cataclysm vibes from SHB?

I have nothing to gain from fear mongering, so you can put away the conspiracy theories.

You claim you have nothing to gain fear mongering, yet here you are...fear mongering.

Cataclysm caused a lot of players to check out of WoW. I've seen Dragon Ball Super try it and it turned into a mess. I saw the TV show Fringe try it and that became a huge mess. And that new Star Trek show tried that out and it turned into a mess. I'm worried that FFXIV is going down this route too. Once whole dimensions are at stake, it's hard to scale down the series before it burns itself out from being too big.

And as stated it's not even good fear mongering because Cataclysm changed the map of Azeroth. Shadowbringers sends us to another planet (kinda).

It would have been better to say Warlords of Draenor or hell even Burning Crusade (tho that was actually a good expac).

No. I'm over these Wow threads being brought on the forums, by people thinking you're relating WOW to FFXIV makes it ok. Please Stop.. No one on these forums cares about WOW. Just go back to playing your failing game, and leave it out of this one. THANKS!

I mean that's not true and you can't speak for everyone. I actively play both WoW and FFXIV and I don't have an issue with either game. I don't understand why people get so uppity when differing games are mentioned. We're all a bunch of punks sitting at computers roleplaying being heroes in a virtual fantasy world.

I will say this though: peoples reactions here to various things (differing opinions, people who play WoW, etc.) definitely show the true colors of this community and I'm pleased with that. Everyone likes to pretend FFXIV players are absolute saints and perfect angels when really they can be just as nasty, petty, and two faced as literally any online, anonymous community.

The parallel isn't with Cataclysm.

WotLK/HW - North/snow/ice
MoP/SB - Asian theme
WoD/ShB - Alternate universe

But they're all generic themes, so nothing to get worked up about.

I have watched many of my favorite franchise burn to the ground, so I've been conditioned to raise any red flags I see for discussion. I see no reason why I should hold my tongue and give the benefit of the doubt and neither would I classify this as fear-mongering. My motives aren't so sinister. However, accusing me of fear-monger or these other posts telling me to "leave it out" of the forum is poisoning the well and may very well cause some bad-faith discussions so perhaps we shouldn't continue this any further.

This expansion has made many more people actually consider buying the game and starting fresh characters. People have seen Shadowbringers and thought "wow that must actually be a fun game. I should buy it"

Unfortunately this is also until people realize that it's a really, really long story to get to the newest content. "It's a story MMO, if you don't want..." Yes, yes, we've all heard it a thousand times before. Point being, it's still a really long road unless you drop money to skip it all. There's no other way around it either. Several other, most other, MMOs let you do whatever you'd like to kind of level up and go through the content without too many restrictions.

I hate to say how many friends I've lost because of the grind in ARR alone. "It gets fun at... It starts getting fast at..." It needs to lock people on right off the bat. And FFXIV is growing and that's amazing, but we also have so, so many who don't get through those long, boring spells.

Because you are literally looking at the most shallow thing and trying to draw a negative connection to something you don't like. That's why this is bad fear-mongering.

You could have pointed out the class changes, lowering of difficulty in dungeons/raids or something.

But instead your post was focused on the parallel world we're playing in which as stated is not unique.

I just started the expansion, I can't at this stage offer any in-depth analysis. I can produce one if you like, but I'm not going to be able to do it on the first day. I'm just feeling Cataclysm vibes at the start and I'm a little worried.

Then that's fear mongering. You have nothing to go on but a gut feeling and need to yell it from the roof top (or forum) that you think the sky can come down.
