It really doesn't have to be expensive. GC turn ins give loads of exp, and if you're self sufficient, you'll spend no gil or even gain it leveling DoH/DoL. But, if you don't find the gameplay of them fun then yeah, dumping gil into it helps.
Become what you must. Become the Warrior of Darkness.
... and also, say, the Scholar of Darkness, and the Ninja of Darkness. That'll be enough.

There is some class specific content that isn't fair. For example, Whitemage gets a unique mount for completing a quest. Where's the Paladin's mount quest?

Bad example, doesnt paladin already get 2 mounts(just having to run some instances for them rather then finish a quest)? Wheres my BLM mount(smaller flying carpet?)? Wheres my GSM mount(some tinkered monstrosity?)?
OP, you said that your caster character will have a history of dancing. Thats 3/4 roles. Justifying adding gunbreaker to that characters learned classes isnt that big a leap. Got beaten up pretty bad in some fight(zenos?). Heard rumor of some new fighting style using a sword and magical bullets. Decided to look into it so that you can avoid a repeat beating in the future. You can even "decide" that you prefer spells and only break out the blade "when necessary". Boom, done.

Having done this quest, it is definitely a big piece of lore that SHOULD NOT have been locked behind completing all the role quests. I would argue that it should have been part of the MSQ at some point in the Tempest before the final battle. That is my opinion about it anyways.
