Partial sales should be the default. Put a flag in there for those sellers that don't understand the advantage.

Part of my Market success is based on selling small stacks (5 or 10 vs. 99) for a slightly higher price. Y'know, how actual retailers do it. Despite that I'd still support such a change

If I'm selling a stack of 10 for 10k/ea and a stack of 50 for 6k/ea, I'm doing it because I don't want to sell you 10 at 6k/ea. If you only want 10, buy the more expensive stack of 10. If you want them cheaper, buy the stack of 50 and then resell it yourself.

Partials would be a different story if we had a blind market like XI.

Say SellerA could put up 10 at 10k/ea and SellerB put up 50 at 6k/ea, but all the buyers could see was "2 sellers" and a history. Then if a buyer said, "I want to buy 10 at 7k/ea", then they would get 10 of SellerB's items and SellerB would get 70k minus taxes. That sort of system would be fine.

However, our system shows you the prices that sellers are listing things for, and it would be way too easy for buyers to just buy 1 of a specific super-underpriced stack.

Not everyone, obviously (as this thread amply demonstrates), but a lot of people just put whatever amount they’ve got up at or slightly below the current cheapest price per item.

While there is definitely a market reason for selling a half stack at one price and a shorter stack at a higher price per item, most people are not looking at things that way. They just want their stack to get sold sooner rather than later, and (erroneously) think that having the lowest price is the way to do that.

I personally would love to see the ability to buy 1-X of the item being sold. That would have the lowest price being the one always being bought from, and if someone wants in bulk, they simply buy everything starting from the cheapest towards the more expensive until they have the desired quantity.

Then again, I wish they would allow retainers to buy off of the board as well, in a reverse of a sale. Retainer set to buy stuff offers a certain amount of gil for the item(s), and if people want to sell at that price, they do so.
