The aftermarket value of the items you purchase are determined by you. In your case, the value is still high enough to reconsider changing to a Viera. If you follow through with the fantasia, then yeah, you will have pretty much set a lower value on the items you will no longer be able to use. Because you indeed are not a fortuneteller, it would be a good idea to not discard any of those items in case you decide to change back.
I don't think they are purposefully trying to make us feel bad, but some might feel forced and the feeling is still there, so why not solve it?

What you mention about weighing up pros and cons is the core of the issue. The problem is players will feel bad because they won't be 100% happy with any of the options. You stay the same and you are not playing the race you want and you are actually willing to pay money to do so. On the other hand, if you buy a fantasia, your items lose value. You chose the race over the gear, but you can't actually equip them now.

My point is I don't see a reason why they shouldn't be tradeable like many others you get from a simple event through 2 quests or the wedding ones. It came to me as a surprise because I didn't expect it and I don't understand why it isn't possible.

You are right. I suppose that is exactly the mentality behind their marketing department.

In view of the last comments I'd also like to know if everyone agrees with genderlock items for whatever reason or if they just join to say "it's your fault" even though they don't agree or don't even care.

Also, I'd like to know if you could think of another reason besides money making for this restriction.
