It won't die, though I fully expect it to decline a month or so after the expansion launch, it'll survive, I mean if EVE still lives, FFXIV ain't going anywhere unless YoshiP-SE decide to call it a day.

I'm guessing new one comes out in 5 years and this will still be around for a while just like ffxi
I'm just gonna throw this out there for perspective. UO (Ultima Online) is still up and runnin, still has a decent community and the game came out in 1997. The only way a MMO actually dies is if either the developers do something monumentally stupid financially, or if the entity in charge of the game decides it is so longer worth maintaining. Considering how passionate Yoshida and the developers are at SE, I highly doubt this is ever going to happen. The game will be around for a long time.
Forever and ever.
Why does no one mention the 10 year plan? I think it was brought up a few times.
So at least 4 more years, but likely more, all depends if they can pull of an interesting story after completing the current main arcs.
Personally I hope not too long after the 10 year milestone, give room for something new and better and stop milking this cashcow before it runs completely dry.
Great community btw
The game is going to going to get major updates until atleast the end of the xpac after Shadowbringers, because there for sure will be another xpac. The devs even already joked about how they already have plans for it, atleast MSQ wise.
After that? Well for one it depends on where the story ends. If the Ascians haven't been delt with by the end of that one we will for sure get another after that. If they have been, the Empire is no longer trying to make war by that point as well and thus the story is at an end for everything major since 1.0. But there are still plenty of places to go before even going into exploring even more of the First than we will be as well as the other Shards.
So if SE keeps putting money into the game we will keep seeing more xpacs with plenty of places to go.
FFXI is still going. and has some big plans for 20th bday. So I would say the fact that FFXIV is still growing it's going to outlast most players. Even more so people that ask this question looking for a reason to find something else.
Commendations.
If I play dps I only give it out to other dps.
If I play tank I only give it out to healers.
If I play healer I only give it out to tank.
Only if they should be getting a commendation.
There are always exceptions to the rules!
A very long time, I think.
A better question will probably be, when will a new FF MMO replace FFXIV as the main FF service?
Like XIV superseding XI, another one will eventually do the same to XIV.
I expect XIV will get to at least 8.0 before that happens though.
