How many years do you think FFXIV has left?

No, this isn’t a FFXIV hate or complaint thread.

This is me genuinely wondering how long the game has left? FFXIV is the first mmo I’ve ever played, ever. So, this game will always have a special place in my heart. But most great services must eventually come to an end.

I see people complain about so many things on FFXIV....like glam, hairstyles, difficulty of content being “too easy”, customization, graphics, many things. Many things that Square Enix have shown no interest in touching.

Just makes me kind of scared of how long this game has until it’s player base decreases. What do you think? I would say 5 or 6 years.

(I will not respond to negativity)

It will last as long as the game has a dedicated developer team that enjoy the game.

im pretty sure ill retire and still see this game on. I dont ask something like that about something i love.
but such question....its like have a child and ask mother how long she expect her son's gonna live, or finally have a girlfriend and ask her how long relationship gonna last.

Well FFXI is celebrating its 17th year and they're already planning on something for the 20th anniversary so going by that and say this game still has quite alot o years left.

I see it lasting another three expansions minimum, honestly.

We have three known major unexplored regions currently, which are Ilsabard, the New World, and Meracydia, and the latter two are potentiallly large enough that they could house multiple expansions worth of content if they're continents of a scale similar to Aldenard.

I feel like this game is at the same point as FFXI in 2006, when Treasures of Aht Urghan came out. That was the last expansion I played in FFXI, and a lot of people I know quit around that time.

SE may come out with another expansion in 2021, but by then, the next gen consoles will be out, so I think it will be tough to draw attention for an older game with PS3 era graphics.

I really hope a brand new MMO is in the works.

I mean, I’m glad FFXI is still alive (sort of alive?) but the way the community complains about things and the way Square Enix doesn’t touch or fix most of those complaints, I just see it being 6 years. Like you said..3 expansions.

    Longer than it should.

The other current games with its playstyle is WoW and WoW classic.

Its not going to bleed off people to anything EQ is doing, or any of the CoH servers. Its not going to have a significant population decline to ESO, BDO or GW2, each for a variety of reasons.

The next major release "should" be Pantheon (it could very well not be). Legends of Aria is probably going to die before it launches at this rate. Crowfall had potential until it went full "pay to prepreprepre-alpha" cash shop overload. the other slated "MMO's" for 2019-2021 arent a similar style.

At this point unless 14 shoots itself in the foot and head simultaneously, its not going to have a solid competitor for another full expansion cycle unless Wow pulls its head out of its butt.

The upside to this, if you really like the way 14 does things right now, look forward to 4 more years of it.

If you prefer innovation, pray someone has been doing something in secret for a couple years and launches at some point in 2020.

According to recent census numbers (which are admittedly not 100% accurate, as they're done using unofficial means and SE doesn't release actual subscriber numbers), the game has more concurrent subscribers than it ever has before, even in the leadup to an expansion. The negativity you see here on the forums and on some social media come from a combination of the people who have issues with the game tending to be the ones to actually speak up (you don't complain about something if you're enjoying it most of the time) and general human negativity bias (we notice the negative more than the positive for a number of reasons) and are not necessarily representative of everyone playing the game. FFXIV is in a pretty healthy spot right now, even if it isn't perfect, and unless something radically changes it'll probably be around for a while.
