Why must we have geta-esque sandals on our feets if we have nothing equipped in that slot? Would the lack of heels and maybe wriggling toes crash the server with the posture changes, or is this a social tabooo thing?

It's really odd that isn't an option. The modding community seems to have no problem with that. They could at least offer an option where wearing something like the Emperor's New Boot's would allow that.
My guess is there to lazy to give us barefoot. All those that's removed them from using a mod sure haven't crashed the servers. Makes no since to me why they haven't let us now have that option.
From what Yoshi-p says the big reason they have to use the sandals is because of how your character is relative to the ground.
In most cases when not fully on the ground you're actually lifted a slight bit off. You can see this in areas like Amapador Keep for example. The sandals are meant to make it seem like you're actually on the ground despite your feet not really being there. If they were to take that away everyone would soon be noticing that they're floating in midair and it would end up taking away from the immersion.
I believe that was the line of reasoning for it.
When asked about it recently, they said it was because the character would float slightly without the built-in sandals (which are essentially there as permanent shoe soles, so there isn't a gap between the feet and the floor).
It's a bit of an odd argument since characters' feet aren't generally that good at staying at ground level as soon as there's any amount of unevenness, plus there are several shoe styles that change the proportions of the foot anyway.
It doesn't seem to be about not wanting to model bare feet, though, because they've already done it - but only for cutscene characters not seen standing on the ground: the "Word of the Mother", and Y'shtola as she is rescued from the Lifestream.
And camouflaging the sandals as if they were part of the feet, effectively "enlarging" the leg by an inch or so is impossible because....? I read somewhere it's because it was a cultural thing, and honestly find that more believable than the float excuse.
*edit*
Quick doodle to show my point. I have no idea how modders do it, but it's probably something similar /shrug

The funny thing is they make our legs look broken and tiny for high heels, so what is the difference by giving us bare feet? lol It's like "class synergy needs to be removed" *Brings out dancer* or how people think healers shouldn't dps *trust healers dps*. IDEK.
Sometimes I think the majority of excuses must come from bad translation, there is no way they are that ignorant, I have no idea.
I've seen screenshots with people in the default sandals and they're floating anyway. When asked about it recently, they said it was because the character would float slightly without the built-in sandals (which are essentially there as permanent shoe soles, so there isn't a gap between the feet and the floor).

Modders can make characters have barefeet but a big gaming company can't do it.
Really makes me wonder sometimes.
I'm hoping they'll give us some type of barefoot option in the future, if not that maybe some sandals with nail polish would be nice too. Kind of like the false nails but for our feet.
Because honestly since they have given us false nails, its hard to go back. Love them too much.

If I recall, modders replace your entire foot from the shin down. So you're on the right track but lengthen the leg a little and huzzah. It works because gear actually replaces our body instead of sitting over it. For instance, you don't have a torso under your armor, the armor becomes your torso.
