This will scare off the dabblers sure, but it won't work on an omnicrafter selling in bulk and already sitting on hundreds of millions of gil. They'll just rock bottom down to cost and out produce you until you go away then raise prices again. If someone undercuts me by 1 gil I undercut 50k. If you want to undercut then lets do it! 1 gil is so petty. Be a man. Undercut for real. I do this until the value of the item is so low it is a loss to sell it. This usually chases most people away. When this fails to work I simply make the item at a loss many times over till they do leave. Then I smile, control part of the market and rake in your gil.
To be fair, the people who are barons of the crafting world aren't the ones who'll cry about undercutting. They know the business they're in, and they'll play poker with a straight face. It's the 'get rich quick' kids that wander into a random niche--find it's good money, and get settled that really cry. They'll find something that works, and the moment it begins to slip they'll start to panic and lash out. Because they're not smart enough to play the market game. They just got lucky, and they have no idea how to recover--so they blame the person they feel is responsible for taking over their market. But the truth is--that person can be anyone. It always happens, it's just the way the market.
But man do those children really get under my skin. They'll use every excuse in the book to cry and defend their precious little niche. And yeah, it might be their only source of income in the game, but it's a dog-eat-dog world out there. You gotta be on your toes, and you can't allow yourself to become complacent in a niche market. Not unless you really have the dedication and resources to defend it. And again, the people who are smart enough and well-off enough to retain their iron-grip--aren't the ones who'll cry over it. I just hate those kids so much though. The ones who get all emotional about the market. Undercut into the dirt or get out. No one is entitled to fat margins. They're a gift if you get them, but they're never an entitlement.

You do realize you're actually the one being petty. Undercutting by 1 gil is an effort to maintain the higher price instead of tanking it. Ironically, whenever I get someone that does this, I actively fight with them, wait until their silly vendetta destroys the market, buy up all their stuff and relist it later on. Often times they don't even realize they made me more money. If someone undercuts me by 1 gil I undercut 50k. If you want to undercut then lets do it! 1 gil is so petty. Be a man. Undercut for real. But yes, please continue to "be a man."

Depends on the items and the person. For everyone like yourself who will indefinitely stick to one market and perpetually keep it low, there are several more who will bow out quickly. They only undercut out of a perceived slight. In your case, I either wouldn't be in that market to begin with or make it a side market because, as you said, those mats are easy to get and it costs me little to fight with you.You know that it costs almost nothing to pump out items, right? I love when those 1gil undercutters buy out my stuff, I just keep making more and more as they buy it and they end up with an inventory full of my stuff that they can't unload at higher prices because I can keep prices low indefinitely at the low cost of one retainer market space.
But yes, please continue to buy our stuff and give us your money <3.![]()

1 gil undercuts are smart, not petty. What's petty is getting upset that you have competition and throwing a hissy fit.If someone undercuts me by 1 gil I undercut 50k. If you want to undercut then lets do it! 1 gil is so petty. Be a man. Undercut for real. I do this until the value of the item is so low it is a loss to sell it. This usually chases most people away. Undercutting by 1 gil on lower priced items makes sense. On something perhaps worth 5 million for example I'll undercut by 10 or 100 gil to differentiate it from the previous product (even though 10 - 100 gil makes no difference at that point) just to get bumped up to the top of the market board.
If someone undercuts me by an extreme amount e.g. dropping price from 5 million down to 1 million I'll buy them out unless the price is slightly higher than I would be comfortable buying out in which case I let them sell at under value and keep my item at the original price.
I just undercut because i want the money right away. If people get mad at me, then so be it. But if i am trying to sell something, i will usually list it lower.

So my thing sells faster than their thing.
