Basically still a new player, leveling fishing, while getting the warmwater trout for lev 20 quest, I quite frequently got the fish gets away. NO msg about " something bites ", jut the fish gets away. So when the fish gets away will there be NO something bites message?

There isn't a message. When you get a bite your pole bends and there's a creaking sound. You have to respond by hitting the 'hook' button. Some bites are more subtle than others so you have to watch and listen.

This. This is also why you have that otherwise useless ability to activate a light on the tip of your rod. If audio alerts don't work for you, whether it be because you have sound off or are unable to hear light tugs over the music and ambience, then the light will help you identify tugs. You can see the rod bending when you hook a fish, and the bigger the fish the more obvious it is, but the light just makes it all the more noticeable.

If you stick with fishing it'll be good to learn the differences between heavy and light tugs, whether you use sound or visual alerts, or both. Eventually you get an ability that makes getting higher quality fish easier but makes it much less likely to actually catch them, unless you use the correct hooking ability, based on the size of the hooked fish, which negates the catch penalty completely. Sounds more complicated than it is, but just saying, pay attention to the different tug alerts

Also upgrade your gear.

You need a sufficent gathering stat to catch fish. If your gathering stat is too low the fish get away more often. It can also happen that you are unable to catch them at all with low a gathering stat.

Yeah. What's probably happening here is that your gathering stat is too low to catch some of the fish in that area, so when those fish "bite" they straight up get away without even prompting a line tug.

No matter how low your gathering is, you will always get a tug. It is only when you attempt to reel in a fish it will get away due to gathering. Also, outside of big fish, regular fish do not have minimum gathering levels to catch at all, especially at level 20. Higher gathering will increase the chances you have to catch the fish, but you will never get the "your gathering level is too low to catch this fish" message for regular fish. Sounds like they are just not hitting the button when the fish bites.

You need to also upgrade your gear, not having enough gathering or perception will really hurt you in trying to get the fish you need, try asking a friend or if you can craft yourself some HQ gear and just put some low end gathering materia, by the time you need to upgrade your gear again, youll be able to convert that gear and get more gathering materia, im not sure if you know this already but just saying =].

Edit: you only get "something bites" in your chatlog when you actually hit the "hook" action, otherwise its just hearing the sound or looking at your rod bending.
