I realize sub count is important for an MMO. But what I don't get, is why play something intended for millions of people to play on a relatively safe level at the same time and complain about accessibility?

This isn't, say DMC. Single player with multi player elements. The challenge is there, because it's built that way. This is an MMOrpg. If you think it's too easy, then maybe it's just not for you? 1-50 customer losses over casual content isn't going to matter much against the tidal wave who come for casual content and bunny girls.

Korean mmos are pay to win, you'll have plenty challenge just trying to play the game without spending a dime.

I think it's ok for most of the stuff to be gentle and then higher difficulties optional: extreme trials (midcore), savage raids (hardcore), ultimate raids (hurt me plenty). But I kinda wish the open world mobs in field zones weren't so feeble though. They don't have to be scary but just don't make them so toothless that even a botanist doesn't need to worry about aggroing them and they give up chasing you after 3 feet to reset back to their designated position where they wait for somebody to kill them (if anyone is still doing daily hunt bills, otherwise no reason to pay attention to those enemies.)

The good thing about FFXIV is that it has a bit of everything to cater to every players. Maybe it's just housing that requires a relook at the moment, that's all.

I'm pretty old now I guess. I came up on EQ, played XI for 5 years and started XIV on 1.0. I played XIV now on and off. I resubbed this month with the expansion hype, but leveling my AST I found myself asking why. I mean, healing is no challenge what so ever. I'm mostly spamming my DD spells.

This is just venting, i suppose, but after seeing a lot of WoW refugee threads and videos I couldn't help but thinking XIV is heading in the same direction.

I, myself, will probably buckle and get the expansion, but I will 100% be playing Classic in Aug. and Pantheon whenever that comes out.

TLDR: The challenge is gone and with it the community.
And they can't go back to 1.0 because it is too stressful.

No, they can't go back to 1.0 because 1.0 was awful .

Signed, someone who actually was there from beta 1.0 to the final day. I leveled my first 2 classes to 50 on doblyns and coblyns. I was capped on earth and fire shards when 2.0 started. And had thousands of crystals.

1.0 was under cooked and lacked direction. 5.0, possibly, Has a different type of problem.

i'd say the fear is its going to be less engaging and less special. The problem is less about challenge, and more about boredom.

challenge is one way to allievate it, but they have other factors.

less differentiation in certain job roles.

"streamling" classes until they have less cool things/things to improve on

The same amount of skills, and less mechanics, spread out through more levels (now you need level 80 to get the same number of mechanics as 70 before)

less synergy and interaction between classes.

How good this expansion is, is going to be mostly about the story, and the content, i dont think the classes and jobs are going to be as entertaining as they used to be. Id say they need to focus on cool stuff before streamlining and tight balance in future content.

more uniquness, more fun mechanics, more synergy/interaction between players, thats something that crosses the casual/hardcore divide

    Just... what???
I have no idea what you mean by this statement. The first part is an opinion, and the second part is just plain false. The "community" is bigger than ever.
