    MRD > WAR?

New player here and I apologize for what I'm sure will be deemed stupid questions.

I'm having a bit of trouble wrapping my head around classes vs jobs. I started as a Marauder and finished my level 30 class quest so, now, I need to start the WAR quests? ...and become a WAR? What happens to my status and progression as a MRD? ...or, do I continue on leveling as a MRD, then go back and pick up WAR later? Everything I've read indicates that MRD pretty much ceases to exist at level 30 in favor of the WAR, but there are still skills and abilities past level 30 for the MRD. If I start the WAR job, does MRD level consecutively?

Also, the "one character can be everything" concept is a bit overwhelming. I would almost prefer to, at the most, have one character with all plate dps/tank jobs, one character with all cloth dps/healer jobs, and one character with all leather dps jobs ...is this viable? Does anyone else manage their stable of characters this way? ...or does everyone simply do everything on one character? I know you can't (easily) transfer stuff back and forth, I know that alot of stuff isn't account wide, etc - that's all mostly ok with me as I'd treat each character as their own separate entity. Just wanting to get opinions on this as I'm guessing there is no real "right" answer here.

Thanks for your time and assistance.

Warrior is simply the upgraded form of marauder. You keep the same level, use the same armour and weapons, and still gain "marauder EXP" from battles as a warrior.

It used to be more complicated, and you had to raise multiple classes to unlock jobs and acquire skills, but now it's a straight upgrade and there's no benefit to not doing it.

Make sure to keep up with your job quests, since most of your skills from this point onwards are locked behind completing them.

Warrior is Marauder + X. As a Warrior, you will keep all your Marauder skills and will still learn those you are still missing, but you will also gain new Warrior-Skills on top of that. There is absolutely no reason not to equip your warrior-stone once you get it and you should get it as soon as possible.

Most people just level everything up on the same character. The only time that I've seen people choose what you're wanting to do is for RP purposes where that character's personality is set up in such a way that they only have this or that leveled.

It’s much more viable to be one character for all jobs, in 99% of situations.
You seemed to want to have different ones for ranks, healers, etc. However you should realize nothing is kept when swapping jobs. You aren’t inherently more tanky when playing as White Mage just because you levelled Warrior first.

As the others have said, warrior is just a better marauder. Unlock ASAP and keep up on class quests every 5 levels.

As for each character having no limits, its only as overwhelming as you make it. Just because you can be everything doesnt mean you have to. Plenty of people only level up the jobs that theyre interested in, not even bothering to unlock the rest. And even if you are the sort of person who wants to do everything, you dont need to try to do it all at once or all right away. You can always choose to focus on one thing at a time, only switching when you "finish" what youre currently working on. As for your idea of different characters with different classes, you can do that too if you want. The biggest reason that people cite as being anti-alt is the way the game unlocks content(with item/trade restrictions probly being second). Your main character will unlock all the content that interests you by default just by playing the game. But your healer alt needs to re-play all the story quests and dungeons to get to that same point(along with gearing up). Then when you get to the DPS alt youre doing it all a 3rd time(but with worse que times). It can get to be a bit much. But as you yourself noted, there isnt a "right" answer, just one that hopefully works for you.

A warrior is still a marauder, just a special type of marauder that has extra strength and skills. But since once it's unlocked, there's no advantage to ever going without that extra power, there's no reason to ever play a basic (non-warrior) marauder again past that point.

As to splitting out jobs between multiple characters, some people do it that way.

The two biggest reasons for splitting up jobs between multiple characters are RP (where people may want multiple characters to RP as) and end-game raiding (where splitting them out gives you more opportunities to gear up multiple jobs, and lets you raid with multiple groups without jeopardizing your team's loot).

The most common reason for not splitting them out, and instead doing everything on one character is that you only need to go through the story once and unlock all the content once (though buying a story skip from the MogStation on second, third, etc. alts is another way to take care of most of that if you don't want to do the story again).

It's up to you which way you want to play it. I think the biggest reason people talk about this game being set up to be played with just a single character is more about the fact that all the jobs *can* be played with a single character which isn't something very many games allow. But there's a big difference between being able to play it that way and needing to play it that way, and only the former is true. You can do everything on one character if you want to.

Thanks all for the replies. I guess I need to go get that Warrior stone ...

As for my character plan, I haven't really decided yet what I'm going to do. Right now, just working on my 1st character, 1st class/job, and 1st run-through of the main story. I'm not necessarily an RPer, but I do like my characters in games to be somewhat ...logical? It doesn't make much sense (to me) to be a plate-wearing meat-shield one minute and a delicate cloth-wearing finger-waggler the next minute. Anyhoo, it seems like I'm going to have plenty of time before I really need to worry about it. I just wanted to get some opinions.

Fair enough! I also have a collection of characters that are (at least theoretically) different job specialists - summoner, healer-bard, tank, melee fighter - though I've done all classes on my main character, and I also end up leveling a few "out of character" jobs on my alts just so I can play around with particular glamour ideas, since they all have different clothing styles that suit them as well.

Part of the fun is working out glamours that suit both the job and your character!

Also I've just noticed your character name! Fraggle Rock is fantastic and more people need to watch it.
