I have to say, if they show known characters with a completely different background and life choices, it could be interesting... But as others have already discussed, it can also dull the game because 'oh, they are fine in any of the shards'. So, conflicted on that.
I can't actually agree with this if the doppelgängers has lived a completely different life because that would be just treating someone who only has the same name and looks like a person we know as a replacement for someone who already died.

Considering the First version of a person will stay in the First and continue to live a completely different life from those in the Source that person should still be treated as a different person and we should never feel fine about what happened to the person we know in the Source.

The only time this may become a actual issue if they pull that one "plot" where the two Alternate realities/parallel worlds fused together in the end of the story. Then we will get into those issue but at the sametime the plot most likely will heavily emphasize that they are different people and we should not treat them as replacements for a person who already died.
