    A question about AoE DoTs

This isn't going to be a technical question, more of an 'in world' question and that is: how does an AoE DoT determine who takes damage?

As someone who plays DRK and loves using Salted Earth, I always wonder how my party members don't end up smothering under its effect? I guess you could say it's 'caster's intent' as in whomever is consider the enemy is the one effected, but what if you have a beef with another party member and have less than positive thoughts towards them when you cast it?

I know the official reply is 'because video game', but I'd like to hear other thoughts about it.

I don't know why pouring salt on the earth would hurt most enemies in the game, much less our party members.

After all the crap the warrior of light/dark has been through, they are immune to salt. In fact, due to having an account here on the forums you get a 20% salt immunity due to repetitive dosage. We also have a passive 20% buff to dark elemental attacks due to the massive amounts of shade being thrown.

    cuz vidja gaem!

But seriously, this is an age-old question. In cases of magic, we can argue that intent is weaved into the magic itself by the caster. In games that don't have friendly fire but no magic... you can't exactly weave intent into a bullet, so... "cuz vidja gaem" is really the only answer there. I go with the mindset of intent being what prevents harm to friendlies.

I laughed way too much at this. Sadly no amount of experience can remove the 'other player' debuff we unfortunately we have to deal with sometimes.

I would say intent for a bullet is where you choose to aim it.

Easy. By salting the earth, you are preventing crops from being grown there, thus limiting the world's food supply and causing a worldwide food shortage. The more you do it, the worse it will be, causing mass starvation and millions of deaths.

Enemies know this to be true, and thus are dealt damage from the sadness and regret of the bleak future to come.

The WoL is just an ignorant bastard with no thought towards the future unless someone tells them to think about it. Thus, we do not take damage from it. But be warned, because one day a big bad will whisper the fact into our ears, and we will be one shot by the sudden realization that we have salted all the lands of several great nations already

It's not ignorance, it's a battle strategy. If the Garleans want Eorzea so badly they can have it: a bleak, desolate Eorzea where nothing can thrive. Make them question whether their efforts were worth it.

why is this only DoTs? why does a BLM dropping Flare on a mob not burn the tank?

why does a PLD doing Total Eclipse spinning his word not hit the melee?
